Like Chelios said years ago, Shanahan is a politician. He’s gotta distance himself from the team in peoples minds until they make it far enough that their jobs are safe.

Feels like there's a deep level of dissatisfaction with the Leafs that always comes bubbling up to the surface when things don't go well. We've seen a lot of bad in the playoffs and not that much good. Just the recent history, the way the team responds to certain low pressure situations and the lack of personnel changes at the top of the roster. Continuity can be good for predictable regular season success, but it's also stale.

Also makes sense that Shanahan has stayed away for 'political' reasons. The shot out of a cannon thesis for if they ever won has been roundly disproved this past week with their up and down, getting goalied schtick.
