When will sens win the cup?

Right after they trade cowen, zibanejad, noesen, smith, silfverberg, stone, michalek, conacher and pageau.

Right after Murray leaves. Going off the poor guys history.

Sad but true. He's a great builder but like most GMs (and who can blame them really) he becomes attached to his guys. I can see his patience going to extreme levels, coupled with a reluctance to shake up the team. Eventually the fanbase gets impatient and if that's coupled with a poor season (out of the playoffs, bottoming out maybe) then the replacement rocks the boat and we go for a run.

This.

Pretty sure the majority of teams that won the Cup over the past ten years have all spent right up to or extremely close to the cap. If Ottawa continues to work on an internal budget this team won't be able to stockpile the star talent+young depth to win a championship. The only way I could see Ottawa winning the Cup with a budget is if they focused on defense+goaltending and won in the most boring fashion possible.

Also a pretty good point.
At some point all these great kids we have are going to need raises. If Zib, Silf, Cowen all get in the 3-5 range and we trade or sign for vet help we'll likely overpay for, we're going to have to flirt with the cap eventually. As it is we're probably going to make the playoffs consistently, flirt with the finals and that's about it.

I see us being contenders in 4 years (2017) only if Silfv and Zib continue to progress to first line players. If they top out at 2nd line we'll have to wait for the next crop to roll along.

Maybe if we add one top scorer and Cowen becomes a legit #2 Ill say 3 years.

F I have no idea what Im trying to say- our window was when Alfie was in his prime and when Muckler kept Hossa and Chara in some other dimension.

Im personally in wait and see mode as i believe this team as it stands is not a contender so spending money simply to spend doesn't make sense and im ok with that...as long as when the time occurs and the team is ready the wallet is opened up a bit!

- I see Ottawa winning the cup when Lehner is our bonafide starter.
- Melnyk will have to spend more as our young players start to come into their own & deserve more money, this will take a few yrs. BM will have to add at least one top 3 scoring forward who will be expensive.
- when we stop adding small players to the lineup & continue to get bigger, stronger, tougher & more skilled
- when our young defence becomes more experienced, more confident & more mobile.
- when at least two or three of our forwards get back to the top of the NHL in scoring.

I initially said I thought the Sens would win a cup in 5 to 7 yrs when the re-build started & took all kinds of flack for it since teams can make quick turn arounds with all the options to pick up players now. If that were the case why aren't more teams turning it around? It's yr 3 in the rebuild & I still think it will take 5 to 7 yrs building through the draft & adding the needed peices here & there through trades & free agency.

I think Ottawa is going to be more like Boston was up until recently; always in the play-offs, will win a series or two occasionally, but never a major threat to win the cup. Hopefully, like Boston, everything will align at some point and they could make a run for it, but I doubt it is soon enough that we'd see Spezza hoist a cup (at least not in a Sens uniform), and it might take a decade or two.

Heck, maybe first we can just get any Canadian team to win the cup?

Sens need a more gritty top 6 to get even close to the cup. Way too soft in our top 6...lets say Alfie retires...

Michalek Spezza Pageau
Zibenajad Turris Silfverberg

That top 6 ain't putting any fear to any true contender. Yes they have great skill but none of them really lay the body.

You need guys like Bickell, Brown, Lucic, Horton, etc.. to make space for our skill forwards and work hard to recover the puck to help establish and SUSTAIN an effective forecheck.

Canucks should have won it with a similar team. The Sens are a good two way center away. I say within the next 5 years the Sens should be in the SCF again. There its anyone's game.

Not anytime soon, If they work on there back end maybe. they need to start drafting well on the back end now, and also get a little more talent as forwards since Speeza is not getting healthier and younger. And there captain is almost done, and some others. I will go with 2017-2018.

We're in tough now.

I think we have enough skill and depth to be competitive but not enough to be contenders.

I figure we'll be in the early playoff rounds for awhile.

In some ways, we're more likely to win very soon with guys like Alfredsson still around. As sad as it sounds, he's still an important piece on the team and unlikely to be replaced very easily.

Basically it would come down to no one getting injured and Anderson standing on his head.

2012 8th seed 1st round defeat
2013 7th seed 2nd round defeat
2014 6th seed 3rd round defeat
2015 5th seed SCF defeat
2016 4th seed SCF win

Different play-off format next year. First two rounds are in-division, so likely have to beat two of Bruins, Wings or Leafs; then Pens/Rangers in the conference finals. The NE (or whatever it's new name is) is going to be a tough division to get out of.
