We are closing in on hockey history before our eyes as Alexander Ovechkin looks to become the greatest goal scorer in NHL history, in one of the lowest scoring goal scoring eras of time. The majority of Gretzkys goals came during the highest goal scoring eras of all times, and he finished with 894 goals. Alexander Ovechkin recently passed Gordie Howe who scored 801 to take 2nd place. Ovechkins current contract with the Capitals continues through this season and then has three more seasons til the end of the 2025-26 season.

When will Ovechkin hit 895 goals, if at all?

-He currently has 806 goals
-26 goals this season in 39 games (55 goal pace)

If he continues at the same pace he will be at 835 goals at the end of the season, leaving him 60 goals short of Wayne Gretzkys record of 894 goals

He turns 38 in September, before the 2023-24 season

**This poll will close in February 2023**

As opposed to all those other super important and purposeful threads?

I said January of 2025 - which I think means he'll slow down a bit from his career average.
this is basically just a guess while splitting hairs.... yes most other threads are based on opinions and facts

oh wow look, 21% think its December, 22% think its January. How informative.

Next we'll vote on which team we think will win the lottery in 2026

Sometime in the future unless he doesn't make it.

As for the 2026 lottery, one of 32 teams, now don't you feel fully informed?

Voted February 2025. He will "slow down" a bit. And by slowing down I mean pacing for 40 goals instead of 50 lol.

It will happen the first couple of days of February right before the ASG. Then the all-star weekend will be a weekend of celebration of Ovy so he will have no choice but to attend.

He was supposed to slow down like 10 years ago though which is why I said November (though realistically December-January might be a safer bet). I think if anything now he'll be trying to speed up as much as possible in spite of his age to get that record over with. Also helps that scoring has been trending up recently.

I’m starting to question whether he will slow down in the next few years. His end-to-end rush capability has already been greatly diminished for several years and he’s playing a lot more of a grinder role with goals closer around the net these days. He seems to adapt his game to fit what his body can and can’t do. Starting to wonder whether 1000 is actually within the realm of possibility.

Think he narrowly misses out at the end of next season and breaks it the first week or two into ‘24-25.
