When does Matthews get the C?

JT will get a contract after this one, he is still a very good player. I also think it surprise people how much he gets to be honest. Probably 4 years and 8m on open market. In Toronto he will have to take a lot less.
I seriously doubt he would get anywhere near that - maybe 2 years at 4.

Best for us if he just retires.

I can see Mo or even Mitch Marner wearing the C before Auston Matthews… and that won’t happen until John Tavares retires.

Doesn't stand up for himself or his teammates.

Undermines his coach's authority. Seeks special privileges. Puts his own selfish needs ahead of the team.

Does this sound like Captain material to you?

In terms of both merit, and entitlement, Rielly holds more claim to the captaincy than Matthews. Even disregarding other claimants is Matthews really the most appropriate choice? A team takes on the identity of it's leaders.

In which case Matthews hasn't presented as anything more than a demanding spoiled rich kid.

When he was drafted it was hoped Matthews would be the face of this team. That he would embrace the leadership role. And position himself to accept the captaincy of the flagship franchise of the NHL once that opportunity arose.

His unwillingness to commit long term isn't exactly a ringing endorsement to present him with that "C" now is it?

Hopefully the Leafs don't resign JT
He a really good player but he skate well know in 2 yrs it won't get any better.

MO should be the captain at the end of JT contract.

Never shown anything that comes close to captain material. Sorry, making him captain would be a mistake unless something changes and changes fast.

When 34 cares more about winning a cup then being paid, sadly it’s all about the Benjamin's with some of today’s stars, and I guess there’s nothing wrong with that. Musician Van Morrison, who’s a personal favourite of mine is exactly like this, he won’t play one extra note for free let alone a extra song, which I get, but it does leave a bad taste in one’s mouth. Whatever happened to the passion for what made them great, did it just get eaten by greed, or was it always just a “job.”

What would have happened if Matthews got the C instead of Tavares? Absolutely nothing different.
I think fans care about this a lot more than the players. There's no reason to take it away from Tavares.
Probably would have tried to squeeze out another million in AAV or a year less in term if he was our captain too. lol

Morgan should be the next Captain. So, honestly, probably never for Matthews, maybe a few years if is still around when Morgan retires.
I don't know about Rielly but Captain Morgan has definitely been an MVP for fans of this team the last decade.

I don't think Matthews displays "leadership". He seems like he's between a Phil Kessel and a Mats Sundin. Matthews seems to interact with the media more than Phil. But he's lacking the leadership that Mats would display on the ice.

We've seen every playoffs Rielly turn it up. He took a very team friendly and long-term deal. Does charity work, etc.

In my opinion, he should've been the captain over JT. He should definitely be the captain at the end of the JT contract.

The best players on Leafs would be the worst Captains, and i think they know that. I would have loved to have gotten Karlsson for Tavares and put the C on Karlsson. He is not afraid to tell teammates to step up. And is way more entertaining on and of ice.

I will watch next season Days of our Leafs. Even if it probably will be same but different.

You sure about that? Last year he was getting ripped into so much people wanted to move him to LW. If it wasn't for Justin Holl he'd have been "that guy".

Morgan played a lot better with Schenn, like Hainsey all those years ago, he needs stability on his right. And once again he doesn't have it. Trev f***ed up not addressing that. They needed a stay-at-home D to play with him. Not a puck mover for McCabe and the #2 PP

But he is so much more likable than any of the big 4 up front. He went through those "pain" years and still stuck around without even the slightest rumour he was leaving

Looks like my spiced rum joke went over someone's head.

I’ve been assuming his next deal will end up around Giroux’s current, $7M ish

What’s team friendly about paying a 35 year old Rielly 7.5? It’s a good cap hit today but he got himself longterm security in exchange for a discount today, that contract has by far the highest risk of becoming an anchor on our team.

Except Rielly no one on the team deserves the "C"

especially the ones that gut the team's cap space and don't give much to build a winner. Period!!!
Team doesn't deserve your attention. You should try something else.

Real leaf love fest around here these days. Wierd...I thought this was a fan forum.
