I’ve been watching hockey since the early 90s. The Oilers has a decent chance to pull it off this year. Has this ever happened? I’m guessing the 80s Oilers teams.

Just a numbers game - coz you win as a team and lose as a ditto.

Remember that, Edmonton.

The top dogs can put up real huge points anyway they want - when the rest of the team are real losers.

Your video isnt showing, but yeah, I really empathize with Oilers fans.

What a shitshow this team is... finished top 4 last year and seeing MccDavid and Draisaitl selfishly accumulate points and awards year after year? It must suck for the fans yep.

Big sarcasm here for those with a broken detector.

The rule of thumb when playing with Gretzky was always "Don't worry about where he is. Keep your stick on the ice. He'll find you."
Was it the same when Jari Kurri won his 5:th Stanley Cup and that without the great Gretzky?!

Jesus and God didn't play with Boston, but in Los Angeles, in them days ... but Jari Kurri did in Edmonton.

Here are the closest to hitting it since 95-96 (see @MikeyMike01's post above). Only including years where 3+ guys on one team hit 90+ points.

1996-97, Pittsburgh:
- Lemieux (122 in 76)
- Jagr (95 in 63)
- Francis (90 in 81)

1998-99, Colorado:
- Forsberg (97 in 78)
- Sakic (96 in 73)
- Fleury (93 in 75; 24pts in 15 games with COL)

2000-01, Pittsburgh:
- Jagr (121 in 81)
- Kovalev (95 in 79)
- Straka (95 in 82)

2005-06, Ottawa (ATL HM):
- Alfredsson (103 in 77)
Heatley (103 in 82)
Spezza - (90 in 68)
HM: Kovalchuk(98 in 78); Savard (97 in 82); Hossa (92 in 80)

2018-19, Tampa:
- Kucherov (128 in 82)
- Stamkos (98 in 82)
- Point (92 in 79)

So yeah, Sens trio was the closest (only group with 2x 100 pt seasons) til now (since 95-96).

Another wild stat: from 2012-13 to 2016-17, only Crosby (x1), Kane (x1), and McDavid (x1) topped 90 points! And each in separate seasons.

Penguins 95-96

Lemieux
Jagr
Francis
The fact that team was infractioned to death by the Panthers was an embarassement to the sport. No penalties called. Penguins screwed up by going with Barrasso over Wregget too.

We were left with one of the biggest mismatches in SCF history going in. We could have had a superstar series between Pens/Avs instead. Guaranteed that is no sweep.

Just ranting. Sorry.

Rant is correct though

Last year (2021-22), Colorado had 3 players who were on pace to score 100 pts - but none of them played enough games.

Nathan MacKinnon: 88pts/65gp (pace of 111pts/82gp)
Mikko Rantanen: 92pts/75gp (pace of 100.6pts/82gp)
Nazem Kadri: 87pts/71 gp (pace of 100.5pts/82gp)

The sens almost did in 05-06

Heatley (82-50-53-103)
Alfredsson (77-43-60-103)
Spezza (68-19-71-90)

Spezza was pacing for more than both Heatley and Alfredsson.

Gretzkys #s were just stupid good. 163 assists in a single season like wtf is that shit. How?
Though he'd likely never admit it publicly, imo he was surgical when it came to his attack on the record books. Break the 50 goals in 50 games mark? Check, and I'm gonna score 92. Set the all time assists in a season mark? Check, and I'm going to have more assists than anyone else has points. He just went after it.

Yep, you often hear people say that Gretzky's teammates were a large part of his success- stacked oilers team etc. Yeah his teammates were good but they benefited more from playing with him than he did from playing with them. he was essentially lapping his teammates. That year 84 he had 205 pts, 2nd best on team was Coffey with 126.
In 82 he had 212 points, Anderson was 2nd on Oilers with 105 less than 1/2 Gretzky's totals. That year Gretzky's assists only would have led the team in scoring at 120, His goals at 92 would have been 2nd in pts to andersons 105.
in 81 he had more than double the pts as second on the team too

Agreed. The 80's Oilers referred to as the Harlem Globetrotters or similar is an exaggeration. Often seen in one of many attempts to downplay Gretzky.

Here's the points total of their 6th player in their internal scoring race during 99's heyday

81/82 - 74
82/83 - 75
83/84 - 67
84/85 - 54
85/86 - 56
86/87 - 67
87/88 - 64

7th ranked in internal scoring (to eliminate top five and likely one more PP1-participant)

81/82 - 63
82/83 - 57
83/84 - 55
84/85 - 51
85/86 - 47
86/87 - 51
87/88 - 55

Most of these years Gretzky had almost twice the amount of points as the team's 2nd highest scorer. It all went through him pretty much.
