When does the Yzerplan start getting criticized?

Say the fans of every rebuilding team since time immemorial.
Unless it's the Sens. Then it's we are here, we are great, we have 3 top pair defensemen and amazing depth at forward including Playoff stud who had never seen the playoffs ever Brady Tkachuck and then womp womp.

Not really seeing how the comparison to Ottawa fits.

I agree. I don't see OTT's rebuild similar to DET. I've asked for comparable rebuilds but everyone just wants to spew shit without providing any substance.

I mentioned Vancouver in terms of good drafting while not having any top 3 picks. I am thinking maybe Rangers but their drafting hasn't been as good as Detroit or Vancouver.

Seeing Vancouver move on to the 2nd round is inspiring to me because I can see Detroit do that in a few years as they've had similar success drafting. DRWs are 2 years behind Canuck's path.

And it's a known fact and everyone agrees in the hockey world that Yzerman is one of the top GMs in the league at trading. A big part of Vancouver's success is their trades. J.T. Miller and Hronek.

I don't think Yzerman has to give up the assets Vancouver gave up in trade because I think Yzerman's drafting and prospects are on course to be better. Edvinsson is going to be great. Nobody can dispute that. Wings just need to hit on just a few of ASP, Cossa, Danielson, Kasper. They don't need to hit on all of them, just a couple.

Best of all, that's not even asking anything of Mazur who looks like an animal, Johansson who would be an upgrade in Detroit's bottom paring right now, and Tuomisto who people are sleeping on.

Looking at Detroit's prospect pool, they have some really appealing trade chips. They have an abundance of trade depth. I think that might be what sets Detroit apart from a Vancouver or Rangers.

It is an exciting time to be a Detroit fan. I get why Yzerman is taking time developing his players, but it is a bit annoying because we all know some are ready to start making an impact right now. You have to respect Yzerman's patience. It just tells me ownership has full confidence and trust in the man. He is him.... HE IS HIM!

To be honest, I was looking for Czech prospects but found this funny. 14th out of 32 and no guaranteed superstars. Obviously, just one prospect pool guy and maybe he's a fool. Found it funny.

That guy does rankings only based on NHLe. 14th is pretty comparable to where Detroit was right before Moritz Seider and Lucas Raymond stepped in and both finished top 5 in Calder voting.

Another way to look at it is they are the 6th highest ranked Eastern conference team, ahead of most of the teams they're in direct competition with.

Playoffs would be progress.. especially in the East where the 3 teams ahead of you combined for a 2 and 12 record.

TB 1 and 4
Was 0 and 4
Isles 1 and 4

You were officially the best non playoff team.. so progress would be playoffs! Good luck.
Tampa, Winnipeg and LA combined for a 3 and 12 record. Not sure what point you're trying to make.

Anyway it's funny seeing some of you shift expectations so drastically compared to a year ago. And people question if there's progress..

Bader is a joke lol. He had some batshit insane take a couple years ago that I can't even remember, but from briefly trying to look for it, I'm guessing it had to do with Seider.

EDIT: He's got Detroit's goalie rank as #7... They have arguably two Top 10 goalie prospects in the world and the teams beating them out are:

1. Philly
2. Columbus
3. New Jersey
4. Toronto
5. Anaheim
6. Colorado

I get Anaheim because of Dostal. The rest... HUH?!

Cognitive dissonance much? Yzerman is the GM who traded Hronek to Vancouver...leading to Vancouver's success...

Meanwhile the Vancouver fan base is currently trying to figure whether they should trade Hronek because of his apparent contract demands lol.

Exactly. They're seeing why we didn't want to retain and pay him $7M a year.

Never mind that he was never getting the opportunity here that he's getting in Vancouver, or that he conveniently is having an outlier year during a contract negotiation lol.

To be fair, we'd likely have made the playoffs with Hronek as 2RD instead of Jeff f***ing Petry.

... But realistically, the choice was obvious. He was never going to be our Top RHD again, he was going to demand a contract we couldn't afford, (or maybe more accurately, couldn't afford to let Seider use against us in negotiations) and his value was at an all time high.

It's funny how hindsight works. Day of that trade, Detroit was widely considered the winner. Hronek went to Vancouver and got opportunities he was never going to get in Detroit, playing behind Seider. Somehow it's now a loss for Detroit that Hronek went to another team and played well in a situation he was never going to end up in, here.

Whoa, that's deep stuff!

Show me a DRW fan that's mad about drafting Axel Sandin Pellikka. Wings are so loaded on D.

That is complete nonsense. There is a small loud minority of fans who needle any player that isn't at their top form over 82 games and now its Hroneks turn. And Zadorov is the flavor of the day.

Not every fan is that clueless and wants to blow a hole in the rarest position in hockey and go back to poverty on defense. Hronek is worth 7 million easy. Even his critics want to pay him 7 million. They just don't want to pay 8 million. It is squabbling over those 2 numbers.

Yzerman probably thought Hronek's shoulder was never going to get better. And wanted to unload him before everyone knew.

Detroit seemed like an alright team at the start of the year. Hronek would have been a huge help.

Ask Canucks fans how successful Hughs and the team were before Hronek arrived.

We still didn't want to pay him that regardless of how you or a majority or a minority of your fans feel. 7M was the number we thought he'd get before he went to Vancouver. We only really had one fan around here who vocally hated Hronek.

It's not "his" rankings, it's just NHLe. You know, the ranking method that had such brilliant insight as:

- Tim Stützle #10 in the 2020 draft
- Jake Sanderson #14
- Brandt Clarke #1 prospect in 2021 draft
- Cale Makar 23rd best d-man in the 2017 draft

Attendance issues, loaded up in the offseason and just getting getting torched by the oldman Penguins...what say ye?

If it were any other person in that GM role they would be ousted faster than Robert Saleh.

Yep. It's only one game but the defense looks even worse than last year. You never know how good or how bad Detroit's goal tending is because the defense is so bad, no way to proper gauge.

The only young guys in the lineup were Top 6 picks.. One other "young-ish" guy (24 years old) on the 4th line.

For a team rebuilding forever, where exactly is the youth movement at the NHL level?

Attendance issues?

Huh?

There is some weird narrative that DRWs are on the downswing of the franchise and should relocate to Houston because MLB Tigers had a historic cinderella playoff game across the street exactly at the same time as Wings home opener.

The shiot members on HF Boards come up with gets more entertaining by the day! It's goofy, but it's FUN! It keeps me coming back, for sure!

The Yzerplan isn't as hyped up as it once was. If your "plan" works extremely well for one team but not another in a large enough sample size for both teams, your plan is just...fortunate/opportunisitic and mediocre. The 'Yzerplan Plan' was a flash in the pan with Tampa and has been semi-worthless in Detroit, just resulting in an overall mediocre "plan"

If he was able to somewhat replicate what happened in Tampa with Detroit, then maybe I'd reconsider. But maybe it ends up being a "good plan, wrong time" kind of thing in the transition to Detroit from Tampa, in that he had a good plan, great circumstances/opportunities for his time in Tampa, and a good plan, just not good enough circumstances/opportunities in Detroit.

For now, I don't think his plan is worth the hype, but idk. He had 9 years in Tampa compared to 5 in Detroit now. Not as long on the job, but a sizable time to consider the impact.

There was a fantasy that Yzerman could routinely pick out the next Brayden Point or Nikita Kucherov in the late rounds and build a contender quickly. Also he inherited Stamkos and Hedman and he had nothing in Detroit other than Larkin to build around, who's not on their level.

He's done an ok job, but has the team in no man's land it looks like, trying to save his job with veteran signings. He has Patrick Kane and Vladimir Tarasenko in key top 6 roles right now for example. The contracts they signed are fine, but how does this team contend any time soon with a situation like that?

Arguably the Sharks are in better spot right now going forward and there's been few GMs maligned as much as Grier on these boards. Just need to get lucky in the lottery really if you want to be a contender, the scouting is so good these days impact youngsters go early and Detroit had poor lottery luck.

Agree with all of this.

Giving SY the benefit of the doubt - the deals to Kane & Tarasenko are only 1/2 years deals respectively. There are a couple marginal longer term deals (Compher, Copp), but those guys are decent roster filler.

Right now - the Wings have 4 proven "core" players on the roster - Larkin, Debrincat, Raymond, & Seider. I know that SY was starting from scratch - but after 5 years I think it's fair to say that you'd hope for more than that. The Wings are going to make it or break it on the next generation of prospects ability to step up and contribute. The huge challenge is the scope of what is needed. Looking forward to seeing how this shakes out.
