WJC: Whats wrong with Canada?

But why were they vulnerable to losing in the last minute of the QFs?

I wrote earlier that the player selection and Cameron's strategy turned each game into a coin flip. A different team and a slightly more aggressive strategy could have made them a tougher opponent that was less reliant on luck. And the coaching and player choices are systematic issues.
Fair points. Though you cannot legislate for individual errors, and for the Canadian player to take a dumb penalty towards the end of regulation is just a stupid individual error - just like the Czechs in their group game against Sweden, were they took unforgivably dumb penalties and were punished for it.

Goalies sure, but defencemen? Korchinksi, Power, Zellweger, Clarke, Byram, Guhle, Harley. DuPont, Yakemchuk, Parekh all in the works. I agree to some exten though, some of the younger American guys like Sanderson, Hughes, Hutson and Faber have established themselves more at a younger age, but it’s not like Canada isn’t producing elite young defencemen
I like your take...the real concerning thing for me is WTF happened to the Great French Canadiens,Quebec use to produce...no Lafleur,Dionne,Perreault,MLemieux,Bourque,Goulet,Martin,Brodeur,Roy,Potvin,Bossy,SSavard,DSavard,Richer,Robitaille,PTurgeon,Robert,Vachon,Vadnais,Ratelle,Gilbert, Laroche,Chouinard,Sauve,Mondou,Damphousse,CLemieux,EDesjardins,RCloutier,STurgeon,Picard, Deblois,Quintal,Gelinas,Juneau,...I could go on and on but really WTF happened...teams shied away cause the language barrier or plain racism as Bob Sirois wrote about...French Canadiens just weren't given a fair shake...And the Western League hasn't produced all that many great players...The OHL still produces players but no top flight Goaltenders and as far as D-men go well...
... or Viagra!

USA ain't much better if ya Yanks even think so:D.

Its pretty bad that the USA is about to be run by an embecile yet again...he's the epitomy of stupidity a Buffoon with a grade 2 education from his own idiot University...I feel for the Good People of the States they deserve a helluva better than that "Maroon"!!!

Pretty much agree with everything except for the fact that the WHL hasn’t produced anything. You look at Team Canada in 2025 and you have Point, Stone, Theodore, Morrissey, Sanhiem, Hill, Reinhart, Hagel, and Jarvis. Plenty of players on the roster that played minor hockey or Junior A out West too such as Makar and Toews. As well as the WHL youth movement with Bedard, McKenna and DuPont.

Agree with Quebec take though. Outside of Montembeault, no Quebec Rep. only players who played in the Q are the Nova Scotia boys.

Only having heard it on here, but if the (relative) lack of practices is true, that’s absolutely fascinating. You make roster selections that are clearly designed to create a supposedly „coachable“ team that would be fitted to execute a coach’s vision, and then you don’t use some of the limited time in this short tournament to actually make this work. It’s just weird.
Each practice means there is a mandated media availability for players and coaches. It was alluded to on TSN that as the pressure ratcheted up and with the team underperforming, Cameron may have wanted to “protect” his guys from additional media scrutiny.

Why does that mean that or mandated by who? I seriously doubt that’s an IIHF rule, if anything it’s an internal thing they can change whenever they feel like it.

Not sure, presumably the same agreement that mandates media availability after games? My guess is there is an agreement between the tournament organizers and whoever has the media/broadcast rights, and individual teams sign off on that when they agree to participate in the tournament.

May not be accurate, just repeating what I heard on TSN. Doesn’t seem that outlandish to me though.

Good points. The problem with the lack of players from Quebec might be the fact that at one time most Quebec and other Canadian players came back to Canada when they retired.
They got involved in coaching kids in their communities.

For the last 40+ years they've retired in the states and a lot got involved in kids hockey there.

The fact that QC doesn't and will never get a team doesn't help and the Canadiens aren't the Canadiens of old.

Just for fun but the Canadian's U18 ladies team just beat Japan 17-0... that's more goals in one game than the Canada U20 did in an entire tournament.

I'll see myself out!
