What's with the disrespect of Maurice Richard?

He's just a wartime hockey player. You can consider him a good player, but he doesn't belong anywhere near the top of any list.

He was a seven-time 1st-team All Star, and a five-time 2nd-team All Star, AFTER the war.

He led the playoffs in goals 4 times, and points 2 times, AFTER the war.

He scored 457 regular season goals (enough to easily be #1 all time in NHL history) AFTER the war.

Good grief, people!

That one HAS to be deliberate irony, right?

... right? *sobs*

I can't claim to have seen Richard play, but what differentiates him from Ovi at this point seems to be playoff goalscoring and point finishes. Richard has 7 top 3 finishes, and Ovi 5 such but he actually won the trophy as well, with great competition, which Richard never did.

Ovi is clearly a better RS goalscorer with 8 Richard wins to 5 (yeah, I know the award is named after him lol...).

But I've seen somewhat convincing arguments that his PO goalscoring is a bit overrated, bungled up in certain years and series.

Sorry, what "trophy" are you referring to here?

I agree that Ovechkin should rank higher than Richard overall (see my detailed post in the "greatest goal-scorer of all time" thread), but I wouldn't say it's "clearly" better; more like, a bit better:
Ovechkin (best 12)
1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 3, 3, 4, 5
Richard (best 12)
1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 4, 4, 5

The three times Richard was in 2nd place, he lost out to (i) peak Gordie Howe (by 1 goal), (ii) peak Jean Beliveau, and (iii) prime Gordie Howe.

A lot of people have both Howe and Beliveau in the top-6 or 7 players of all time, and those are the guy preventing Rocket from having 8 goals' titles, just as Ovechkin has.

And Rocket was better in the playoffs.

The Art Ross.

Richard had eleven top 10 finishes in pts, two of those second places are to Howe so what can you say? The other three he lost it to Max Bentley and two of his own teammates, Bernie Geoffrion and Elmer Lach:

1944-45 NHL 73 (2nd)
1945-46 NHL 49 (5th)
1946-47 NHL 71 (2nd)
1947-48 NHL 53 (7th)
1949-50 NHL 65 (4th)
1950-51 NHL 66 (2nd)
1952-53 NHL 61 (3rd)
1953-54 NHL 67 (2nd)
1954-55 NHL 74 (2nd)
1955-56 NHL 71 (3rd)
1956-57 NHL 62 (6th)

Ovechkin has had eight, once winning the league in pts:

2005-06 NHL 106 (3rd)
2007-08 NHL 112 (1st)
2008-09 NHL 110 (2nd)
2009-10 NHL 109 (2nd)
2010-11 NHL 85 (7th)
2012-13 NHL 56 (3rd)
2013-14 NHL 79 (8th)
2014-15 NHL 81 (4th)
