He has only five goals, but more alarmingly, he's -16.

Plus/minus is a stat that requires consideration of context to have any real meaning.

Well, he plays on a good team (that won the Cup last year) and has by far the worst rating on his team.

Other than bad luck, what's the problem?

He does have 14pts and it should be noted not everyone is a fan of putting too much faith into the +/- catagory

He just hasn’t gotten going yet. Whole team has looked out of sorts the last few games, but it’s November. They’ve had two deep runs the last two years and played two games in Finland. That’s a lot overall.

Plenty of time to get their shit together, or realize what shut we need to add at the deadline.

Offensively - it probably is mostly just bad luck.

- He's an over 14% career sniper shooting 6.7%.
- He's got 2 secondary assists which is absurdly low.
- His PDO is a ridiculously low 937.

His shot generation is exactly where it has normally been the last few years. He shoots his career average and has a little more luck with grabbing some secondary assists and you are looking at a guy with 10-11 goals and scoring at a PPG pace.

We are still early enough in the season that one hot week puts a guy like CV right back on track in the counting stats and regression to the mean over a month will put him right back on his usual, dependable pace. That's why you don't make broad statements (not accusing the OP, it's a fair and honest question) based on 1/4 of a season.

Defensively - it really seems the Panthers as a whole are in a Cup hangover. I think the games played thing is a salient point. If you have a little hangover and overall team fatigue - the first thing to go is probably your attentive, do-the-dirty-work defensive structure. Let's be fair - on the backend, they replaced Montour (warts and all - when healthy, he was soaking up 25 minutes a night in all phases that now has to be a shared burden) with some budget options and if Bob is going to be "Bad Bob" or just "Old Bob" and Knight isn't ready to provide some game-to-game consistency - this team probably does have some structural issues to address before making another run.

Whenever I see +/- I think of giving up goals on the PP and getting scored on with the net open.
I expect he's on their PP, not on their PK, and is a go-to option for 6on5 situations.

I have no idea why that stat is still shown.

As I posted earlier--+/- is one of the stats that either you like or hate. Comes down to how you view the game. To put some context why THAT stat is viewed as being very subjective. Nathan Mac who is leading the league in pts is only +5 with 35 pts. Cole Make with 30pts is -1. A case could be made that they should have a lot better +/- stat.

Also if you look at the florida panthers--you could add 3 more players to this thread. Bennet with 18pts is -7, Lundell with 16pts is -2, Matt T is -5 with 15pts,

Verhaeghe's GF% is very concerning. Fixed it for the fans who can't be bothered to inform themselves. Yes it is a problem when most of the team's key player are a low minus or a plus. Screams a player that is barely hanging on to his reputation as a 70 pt 30 goal player and sacrifices team defense to maintain it. As a complimentary player it is very worrisome that he makes other players worse around him.

He's signed until he's 36 and is declining already. I'm not sure many teams would be happy with his pay and production.
Guaranteed he’ll get back on track. Tkachuk isn’t his usual self either and Bob hasn’t been “Bob” to the level he can be either.

It’s November. Guys aren’t looking their usual selves and we’re still in 2nd place in the Division, not concerned even a little. But y’all go on ahead.

He's made some bad passes that led to goals against this week, and taken some offensive zone penalties, but he's getting his shots. They just aren't going in as much as expected.

He's pacing for only about 20 goals. He had over 30 last year and 42 two years ago.

Not saying he's sucked (I don't follow FLA closely). He does seem to be having a down year personally.
Pace means very little at this time of year. He’s shooting at 5.9% so far and his career average is 14.2% so he should have around double the goals that he has which would be paving for around 40 goals. I’m sure things will start to even out and he’ll get a minimum of at least 30 goals/65 points.

To me Verhaege is the classic example of right time right place and then it comes part either slowly or quickly.

Also his luck has been horrible so he should bounce back a bit but those playoff miles can run some guys down and time will tell if it was luck or just the start of a decline maybe.

That would affect more than just him though right?

I mean the +/- is the worst on the team by a longshot.

Because it has some relevance taken with context, some people just want to throw out the baby with the bathwater.
