Watching the games so far, I dont understand the need for the exhibition games. Management doesnt need to look at a full roster of prospects like they do in the NHL preseason and the players sure dont look like they need to shake off the rust. Whats the point of having the mean-nothing games before the round robin?

It's generally a bad idea to go to highly competetive games straight from the off-season.
Not even a week long camp is enough. You need exhibition games to get going.

The players definitely have shown some rust. A lot of players still trying to get into game shape and the exhibition games are good for the players to shake off the rust with nothing on the line. Also gives players more time to get some chemistry with their lines.

They haven't played at full speed for a few months. Going straight into the tournament wouldn't result in the best games

You expect players to come right out of the offseason to play meaningful hockey right off the hop? I bet we will see better hockey once these players get their game legs under them. What's the big rush anyways?

It's to shake off the rust. Much needed practice before the actual tournament begins.

It's NHL's nod to the European/national federations, they get to keep the revenue from the games.

Yep. This is part of it. The NHL and NHLPA split the actual tournament proceeds 50/50, while the federations get $500,000 and the ticket revenues for one pre-tournament game.

This is the other part.

It is to shake off the rust. Coaches get to judge what players are to judge what line combinations work the best. They are also able to judge how well different players do in different situations. Players get a chance to learn the system and develop chemistry. We get teams that are closer to their full potential by the time meaningful games happen.

Edit. Coaches also get a chance to see how other teams works as a unit as well.

Hehe, players can't go into full action without having played a game in 4-5 months.

The exhibition games seem necessary. But for me it takes away some of the mystery of how teams will match up in the actual tournament. Would be cool to see exhibitions against teams not in the torney (example Team Russia vs KHL champs) but it would be tough to find enough teams not totally overmatched by the best in the world.

Well considering the KHL is already underway, I'm not sure it would be possible.

Well all NHL teams also have a preseason camp with practice games against other teams so I think that should answer your question. And to elaborate these games are necessary to test special teams and to tweak lineups.

There is not an important athletic competition in the world that does not have some form of exhibition.

Every competition needs a warm up period
