What's the most prestigious individual award

people say the same thing about the media, that the eastern rarely watches the west. it goes both ways. I trust the opinions of the players over the media when it comes to judging their own peers.

theres nothing wrong with thinking the opposite, I just think it means more from your peers.
 
Someone seriously voted Yanni Gourde as the best rookie and Ron Hextall as the GM of the year. Radek Faksa and Ryan O'Reilly (-23!!!) got first place votes as the best defensive forward. And someone voted Andersen as the best goalie in the league. What does it speak to the prestige of those trophies when a broadcasters and hockey writers give votes that even the biggest homers on HFB wouldn't dare to make?

Art Ross is the most prestigious trophy, because it can't be screwed up with politics. Ted Lindsay is a close second, because I think the player take the trophy and voting more seriously than writers and broadcasters. Seriously, anyone who voted for Gourde, Hextall, Faksa or O'Reilly should be stripped of his rights to vote.

This is the beauty of having public ballots as we go forward. The writers who make silly, homer picks will have to defend them. And their votes can simply be written off if there’s nothing more to it than shallow favoritism.

Smythe
Harte/Lindsay-toss up for me.

The Conn Smythe is the most prestigious individual award in hockey to me. Players who win that award have had their every move examined, critiqued, and analyzed by everyone over the playoff season. The have proven to be the most important player on one of the best teams in the league who comes through when it counts most. The others are great too but only the Conn Smythe goes to the player who meant the most to his team in the biggest games of the year.

Not much different but I do find being awarded the Smythe by being the best player that had the biggest impact getting his team to the finals of the Stanley cup is as matter personal taste between the Hart and Smythe. Raising your game on that stage and being recognized is pretty special. I think the PHWA would be more critical on the selection because it is the Stanley cup playoffs. Popularity wise, Hart is more well recognized and in my opinion is more publicized by the media then Smythe.
 
It's always going to be the Hart just due to how extensive and prestigious its history is. I think Lindsay is better to win (there is no gray area for what defines the award, and it's voted on by the players), but it's still the Hart.

ofc the hart is the one we remember the most, since its voted by the press, the same people who have the job of reminding us of these things.

imo, of the 3 op asked about, I would say Lindsay is first. Then Hart. Conn Smythe last, since only players from 2 teams can win it, and better players might not have good teams.

I would say tho that the Art Ross and Rocket are both better. These shows concrete results.

I am not sure that is the case. It is a trophy awarded to the player who has been most valuable to his team for the entire playoffs, not just the finals. It's not likely anyone would win it that got eliminated early because their team didn't make the finals but I do not believe it is against the rules. Someone will correct me pretty quickly if I am wrong though.:laugh:
 
Conn Smythe AINEC It means the player performs when it counts the most. Sure not all players can qualify for it if they are not on a contender but those are the breaks. It doesn't have to be open to everyone, every season, for it to be the most prestigious.
 
Every player that wins the Hart has the ability to win a Conn Smythe, but a lot of players that win the Smythe do not have the ability to win the Hart.
 
the Art Ross by a lot

voters ruin the credibility of the Hart both via the silly playoff stuff and due to having a heavy forward bias in general

the Lindsay is also both a subjective award that's voted on(although at least there's less stupid team stuff going on in that one) that also has a very heavy forward bias

the Conn Smythe is ruined both by voters and by the very nature of the award meaning most players flat out not even being considered either via not making the Playoffs or their team not winning the cup through no fault of their own(with even someone like say Karlsson last year flat out having 0 percent chance of winning no matter how good their Playoffs were just because their team didn't make the finals)

the Vezina and Norris have that whole voter subjectivity thing going on as well

the Richard isn't bad but it's a lot tougher and more prestigious to lead the league in goals than it is points and it's also a lot easier for the goal race to be heavily influenced by stuff like someone having an abnormally high shooting percentage that year(luck essentially)

the Hart is extremely forward biased as well though

in the past 45 seasons a non forward has only won it 5 times and two of those were Hasek at his best in fact the only difference between the two since Bobby Orr is that Theodore and Pronger a Hart but not a Lindsay and vice versa for Mike Liut(and it's about more than just the winners as well,for example if you look at the voting results for this year the top 11 vote getters were all forwards)

Lindsay means more than the Hart now.

The Hart trophy is following the same route as the Selke : slowly losing its purpose because voters added an unnecessary criterion.
