I think if you’re an expansion team and you retain 50% at the deadline you can probably get back a 3rd.

You lose somebody you want to keep. Or you pay assets to have other players chosen. Nothing you can do about it. Maybe you can somebody to waive, unlikely with those mentioned names. A realistic look would be

Panarin, Zibanejad, Trocheck, Goodrow, Kreider, Chtyil, (Kakko/Laf)
Trouba, Fox, Miller,
Igor Shesterkin
Exposed - Schneider, Lindgren, Kakko/Laf, Halak, Vesey, Harpur, brodzinski (?), (currently, Tarasenko, Kane, Motte, Mikkola)

Hefty in terms of how overpaid they are?

Hayes has 3 years left at $7.14 - rumor has it he will be traded with max retention this summer so we will see. He's a solid middle 6C at 50% of his current price.

Atkinson missed all of last season due to injury and is a major question mark health wise going forward. He has 2 years left and just under $6 million.

Ristolainen has 4 years left at just north of $5 million and is terrible.

DeAngelo 1 year left at $5 million and is even worse than Risto somehow.
