What would you trade Larkin for... a thought exercise

A. Like I said, it is a thought exercise.

B. I don't know why you think there isn't any way he demands a trade. We will miss the playoffs this year and we are certainly not guaranteed to make it next year either. Why do you think he would be kosher with no playoff hockey indefinitely?
I feel like if this speculation/assumption was true, we would have heard about it by now.

Ultimately it all comes down to how confident Larkin is in the front office and how content he is with living and playing in Detroit.

If he believes in the front office, asking for a trade now would be like leaving 15 minutes before the.end of a 3 hour movie.

He has next year to figure it out. Another collapase, 10 year playoffless streak, and he is out.

He's on a good contract. The team is slowly but steady getting more depth at C with Kasper and hopefully Danielson next season. So let's wait and see Larkin can performance in a team where teams can't just focus on shutting his line down.

I doubt Larkin wants to go anywhere else with his family so rooted in Michigan as well. Plus trading him now would just set us back further because we probably wouldn't get an ideal return back.

I'd offer up:
1- (1 of C prospects) Hage/ Beck/Kappanen
2- both MTL 1sts this draft ~13 & 17
3- Mailloux (RHD)

Larkin is the perfect 2C

Proably 2x 1st round picks + quality prospects.

But this isn't happening for the next five years.

And then we are a contender. And he will extend.

So, this is quite of out of realistical scenarios.

This team success is not about Larkin. It's about quality team depth through roster and our other kids panning out. Larkin is just fine.

If he's not kosher with it maybe he should play better. Since the 4 nations break he has 2 more points than Kasper and is a -11 vs Kasper's +4. Not sure why he should feel entitled to playoffs if he's not performing better than a rookie.

petes mentioned the possibility of carolina being a good fit in the other thread. larkin for nikishin perhaps? kasper is looking like he could hold his own on the first line. if you believe that danielson is your solution for 2c and one of finnie, plante or becher will make it as a c

nikishin - seider
edvinsson - sandin-pellikka

In my hypothetical, you could possibly draft Anton Frondell, add Noah Östlund, and have Marco Kasper and Nate Danielson as your centers. No guarantee that any of them end up better than Larkin, but you'd have 4 guys all drafted between 5ish and 16th overall and all right around 19-20 years of age. They would all be in their prime when Mo, Ed and ASP are all in their prime.

Just following the most likely path in this thought experiment, e.g. we reset the rebuild to fit the prime ages of our best young players.

Of course we all know it won’t happen, hence the though experiment but I think something to that effect is interesting. “Cashing in Larkin” for multiple high end pieces is a logical path.

I’m still not sure I’d want to see this team take that step back right now haha.

Maybe Stankoven :naughty:

Depending on the draft lottery results, I’d take that. Give me Hage over the others.

If Detroit miraculously moves into a top4 pick I’d trade Larkin for this package and get one of Hagens, Frondell, Desnoyers with Detroit’s pick then trade the 13 and 17 separately for defense and 2nd line forward help.

I’d love this but doubt Carolina does it

Nikishins potential is too high

larkin + debrincat? i'd be willing to go through another down season while our young forwards figure it out knowing we're rock solid on the backend for the next decade
You would be willing to trade Larkin AND DCat for a 23 year old soon to be 24 when next year starts with zero NHL games?

Easy

Alexander Ovi
Wayne Gretzky
Leon D

McDavid is a bum. Same head as Larkin. As in he lacks something.

In reality. Nothing. Red Wings are so far past trading him for value, it’s asinine to think otherwise. He’s damaged goods.

would you trade larkin and debrincat for a left handed seider with a better shot on an entry level contract?

i mean, the premise is that larkin asks to be traded, would control where he goes and would certainly prefer to go to a contender than buffalo + debrincat probably wouldn't want to stay here either if we move larkin. add our 10-12 pick this year and a top 5 pick next year to this young group and we'd have a formidable looking team going into 26-27

Yes I would but we are assuming he will be that which is not certain. Like I said he has played zero NHL games. I think if I'm willing to give up a #1C/#2C thirty goal scorer and another 30 goal scorer both in their primes id want a lot more than this.

Getting rid of Cat is the dumbest thing I've ever read. Why get rid of a proven goal scorer? You're gonna downgrade or get equal?

I pray Cat retires a Wing.

The package would have to be sizable especially with that contract in an escalating cap market. I also think you can cross off some bad teams being thrown around as Dylan isn’t going to a bad market or team. So like debating Buffalo doesn’t make a ton of sense to me.

I mean Toronto with the big return lineup piece being Knies. Maybe it is also Danford and a first but his cost control would be crucial for the Leafs. I hate the Leafs more than anything but I also have to look at the places that can garner good returns that he will likely go to.

I would do something around Byfield in LA if they are willing to talk about him.

I actually don't want to move Larkin for the record.

i've got fans from both teams saying no way, so that probably means it's close

listen, no one is a bigger debrincat fan than i am. but the premise of the thread is that larkin goes to yzerman and requests a trade. debrincat would probably request a trade at that point too since we'll basically be admitting that we're retooling the rebuild

they're not gonna want to go to buffalo, so that means we have to find a contender with can't miss prospects. most contenders don't have can't miss prospects. we desperately need another 1st pair left d, in fact it's the main thing that people won't shut up about around here. nikishin is a great choice because he's only 6 months younger than seider, so we wouldn't have to wait long for him to get up to speed. in fact, he'd probably be our second best defenseman the first time he steps on the ice
