What would you prefer - finishing top 5 or bottom 5 in NHL standings this season?

Top 5

I want to tank but if we're good, we're good.

Beside, we have Florida's pick, so in any case we should come out of the 2023 draft with some interesting prospects.
Would a team not be willing to give their first overall for Montreal's two first rounders? Might have to add a prospect and another pick, but it'd be worth it to both parties would it not?

What do you mean their 1st overall?

The actual 1st overall? Not a chance unless we have a Top 4 pick ourselves and it's part of the package.

Or you just mean to move up a little bit?

For me, the answer is very clear and without any doubt. As for my life, I prefer that I suffer and study hard for my future, than going to party and have fun for few days/weeks then my future is screwed.

Let me ask you: for last season, do you prefer that we make Playoffs, or finish bottom 5 ?
playoffs with first round exit or bottom 5? Is that what you are asking? Big difference than top 5. Ill take the bottom 5 last year.

Going back to our Cup final run.....I wouldn't trade that run for Power or any other player in that draft. That was the most fun I have had watching hockey.....ever.

For me its that dead zone between finishing 5th from the bottom and 20th overall that I don't want. If I had to choose, I'd take contending team any day, especially with our current young core.

It's suppose to be a stellar draft,so two picks would be better than one would it not. Throw in a prospect and a pick or whatever and you get the first overall.

It won't happen. No one is trading the 1st overall this year. The players at the top are too good.

Top 5. This many young players and fundamental core pieces experiencing success as a group is extremely valuable. Losing for years on end gives you Edmonton/Buffalo-style rebuilds that last 10 years.

I have a RBC tattoo with an image, but it stands for something entirely different.lol

Guy Lafleur comes to mind.

The Lafleur pick wasn't a 1st overall yet when it was traded. Besides, it was another era, and no GM would make that trade nowadays, knowing great prospects like Lafleur and Dionne are sitting there at the draft and your team is expected to finish at the bottom. One of the worst trades in hockey history.

Pollock tried very hard to get the 1st overall pick the next year to acquire Denis Potvin, but the NYI GM rightfully refused, with the results we know.

Top 5 isnt happening.

However, I'd be lying if I said that I'm not hoping for the Habs to win each time I turn the TV on. Cheering for losses just feels so unnatural.

Guess we will have to wait and see what happens then, later.

I am surprised by the results.

If we are top 5 in the NHL it will mean that the team has progressed greatly and all our young players took the next step.

Bottom 5 is not a bad scenario in a rebuild but I am shocked to see these results.

Poll should have been if you're rooting for the Habs to win or lose. Bottom 5 is quite feasible, but there's essentially zero shot we get Top 5. That said, I'm rooting for them to win each and every game. Seeing Guhle, Slaf, Dach, Xhekaj, Harris play key roles in a win is very exciting :)

My god. Imagine if the Habs make the playoffs while Florida somehow ends up in the bottom 3.

Playoffs + a top 3 pick :banana:to end the season.

I'm being greedy but this is what I want to see.

People get excited way too quickly with a few wins. The calendar at the end of December and January is HARD. We are starting the season with a relatively easy calendar.

Finishing top 5 and not getting one of the top prospects would be such a downer. Finishing top 5 does nothing good for us this season. It’s good that these kids learn how to lose.

Top 5 for me.

The chances of that happening are mind numbingly slim. Though for the sake of the OP. If this were to happen, if it were the kids leading us to such great heights. Then it's a no-brainer for me. On the other hand, if it were the older veterans leading us to a top 5 finish. I'd say no, as the chances of them repeating their success. Might not be as feasible to sustain in the future.
