With the cap rising he is going to get 13+

Would I pay that? No but my team isn’t a “Mitch Marner away” from making any noise

Less than $8M probably. He's maybe "worth" more than that, but there's a big opportunity cost to signing him to a bigtime "core player" keystone deal. It means...he's one of "The Guys" you're deciding to build around - and i just wouldn't want to do that. Cliched as it is to say, i just don't think he's a "winner".

So the deal would have to be under ~$8M in the sense that you can afford to have a secondary/supporting winger at that price point. But he's obviously not going to sign for anything close to that little. :dunno:

With what Pettersson and Nylander got and then Draisaitl going up to 14 I think he should probably be around 12. The caps going to jump quite a bit coming up and he’s a great player despite the playoffs being not ideal.

Not a cent more than Nylander. I know how good Marner *can* be, but his failures in the playoffs can't be ignored. He hasn't done anything to earn a substantial raise in my eyes.

It’s tough with the rising cap over a 7 year deal. He’s probably a 9-10m player with the current cap. That might be equivalent to a 5-6m player today in 5 years from a cap percentage perspective. Think he’d probably get 12-13m as a ufa, which would be an overpay in the first couple years but be fine if the cap increases 5% every year.

$10m seems right to me. his skill level is worth more but his playoff performances would make me stop at $10m.

@biturbo19 is pretty much spot on, however, 8 seems low. But whether it’s 8 or 10 is irrelevant. His agent is going to sell his regular season and treat him like a super star, so his salary is going up, not down.

This feels a little like the discussion from the film Moneyball about Johnny Damon.
