What would the NHL equivalent of the Luka Dončić trade be?

Seeing a lot of Matthews in here but Doncic has seen past the 2nd round. It'd be more like Draisaitl getting traded since he made the finals as part of an elite offensive duo the previous year and is arguably a top 3-4 player in the world (like Doncic is). It's crazy that it happened.

I wonder how it will work with 2 ball dominant players with similar games with Bron and Luka but that's definitely not an on topic convo here.
Yea, Matthews is the worst comparison. Doncic has playoff numbers second only to MJ, Matthews can't even do the bare minimum.

A better comparison would be Mac or Drai for Stamkos if there was a bigger age gap. Or something like Quinn Hughes for Erik Karlsson

My friend who follows both sports said something like Auston Matthews for JT Miller.
Comparing Matthews to Doncic is a joke. One has one of the greatest playoff performances of all time. The other is Matthews.

Miller is also a far better hockey player than Davis is at basketball, especially with how unreliable he is

If the Canucks trade Hughes for Karlsson I'm definitely going to find out what bleach tastes like.

There really isn’t a comparable trade because NBA stars are treated differently and have way more say, influence, and power

Maybe i don't understand basketball but why did Dallas trade Doncic? He's like the second best player in the league and only 25 yo.
Could be anything from the Dallas GM is a f***ing moron, Dallas owners wanted to get under the luxury tax threshold, or Dallas owners want ties to sports gambling which Texas has rejected, so they'll tear it down and move to Vegas.

There's also the collusion angle. Ratings are down so the league wants a star in LA, and the two GMs are friends going back 20 years when one was an agent and the other worked for Nike

Subban for Weber?
Weber was better than Subban

McDavid for Dougie Hamilton

Doncic is the best player in the NBA. Second in playoff PPGs behind Michael Jordan. Dragged bad Mavs teams to the NBA finals and conference finals.

The reality of the matter is that it was organized by the league like when Gretzky was traded to the Kings for basically nothing.

When the league is struggling your star player goes to LA

It’s a top five player in the league in his mid 20s going for a really solid player but he’s on the wrong side of 30 and not the top guy on his own team. The sort of trade where every other team is mad because they would have been in on this and many of them would have been able to make a better offer. Matthews for Miller isn’t a bad comparison. Maybe something with McDavid instead?

Draisaitl for Malkin and a 2029 1st

Matthews is a top 5 player like Luka.

David is a top 10 player. Miller is nowhere close.
If you ignore playoffs you might have a point. But that completely ignores the context of Doncic carrying his team to the finals, something Matthews has never and likely won't ever do

And Doncic is closer to top 3, arguably 2. Meanwhile Matthews is barely top 5, and there's a better argument that he's much closer to the often injured AD.

Miller is a top 10 player

Draisaitl for Malkin and a 2029 1st
I don't really see that one, the Penguins will be shit in 2029. The Lakers are likely back to being a top team by then

Doncic pretty much has to be Draisaitl 2 years ago (prior to the extension), if you concede that 27/28 in the NHL is roughly the same as 25 in the NBA.

As for Davis, probably a top 15 player on a premier franchise, early 30's... 2 years ago Panarin maybe fits the bill?

2023 trade, Draisaitl for Panarin + 1st? Though Draisaitl had yet to do the SCF thing that Doncic just did.

Completely different sports so the comparison doesn’t make sense. Luka controls almost every possession on offense, there’s much more high event impact events in general. It’s a silly comparison. It would be like saying McDavid is way worse than Mahomes because of rings. Certain star players and certain sports have a larger impact on team success and a much narrower range of variance in single game or single series settings.

Best way to handle is just a fairly generalized sense of league “rank” so to speak rather than try and jam a square peg into a round hole.

Matthews was number three on the tsn top player list to start the season. People can squabble on that stuff. NBA fans do the same stuff with players like Luka and Davis.

The only comparable is Mcdavid traded after 2022

Or Crosby traded after 2012

Doncic has 5 1st ALL NBA teams, hes been the best to 4th best player for 5 years in a row. Has deep playoff runs and historical playoff production playing on a mostly subpar or injury prone team

Miller is no where close to Davis as a player

Miller is fringe top 10 player at best 2 of the 6 years he spent with Canucks

AD is fringe top 10 every year since 19-20 to now.

He also is a top 3 defensive player in the world and was as important to the 2020 ring for the lakers as Lebron was

It's hard to compare anything in NHL today because there isn't anyone I can think of that would compare to Davis. Essentially it's a top 4 player in the league entering their prime for a player around 10, but exiting his prime and has health issues.

Talent wise I'd say something like Makar for Scheif if he had Stone's body and a first round pick.
Where it should have been more like Scheif and at least three first round picks.

Everything you're saying makes sense. However you can't ignore their playoff performances. One has the 2nd greatest playoff performance after MJ, the other is one of the greatest playoff failures (relative to their salary and regular season).

The (Toronto) Sports Network says Matthews is number 3? Well shit if they say so it must be true. No bias there whatsoever

No he's not. Davis is around the 8th-12th best player in the NBA. Problem is 1) he's 32 2) he's constantly hurt 3) he can't carry a team by himself, as we saw from his time in New Orleans
Yup pretty much this

Also Doncic has historical ceiling. If he got his health/conditioning into play he can win 2-3 MVPs + 2/3 rings(finals mvps) as the top guy and end up a top 4-10 player ever.

His all time ceiling is incredibly high. His career accolades are absurd with 5 1st team seasons in 7 tries (disqualified this year due to injury missed game requirement)

The Mavs should have gotten a return like

From OKC:

Chet Holmgron
Jay Williams (J-dub)
3 1st round picks

For

Doncic
Lively/Gafford

If they were stupid enough to move on from the bewt and borderline greatest player to ever play for the Mavs

Miller is 11th in points since 2020. There's certainly an argument to be made that he's a top 10 forward at least. Hes certainly better than players like Marner and Panarin ahead of him.

Like you said AD is also borderline top 10. Difference is AD is always hurt, Miller is super reliable.

Yea, if Miller went to a super team like AD did he'd have a ring too. He could easily be to Mackinnon what AD was to Lebron

And Miller is in that range as well, bonus points for being healthy.

No argument on point #3 from me

Millers is a non top 20 player in the league

AD is a top 10ish player and not top 10ish bigman

Millrt didnt do enough in the playoffs last year and thats on him.

AD made the 2020 lakers an elite championship team. Look at his reg season stats + first three series stats that final run and he was as good or better than Lebron until the finals

AD is comparable to Rantanen in the NHL
