Speculation: What will Colorado do?

I'm consistently in the minority but I think its time to trade Girard

He does not move the needle for us in the playoffs, and the mistakes are more glaring than the highlights are. I can deal with Josh Manson sucking in the regular season and lighting it up in the playoffs - I can't deal with the opposite from Sam Girard any longer

So IMO, Colton, Girard and probably Wood can go. We just have to replace Girard with someone who's a better playoff fit.

The issue with moving Girard is that he has 2 years left with a $5m cap hit, and it's hard to even find a replacement 2nd pairing caliber D for that cap hit that is plausibly available for what the Avs have to offer.

In a bubble it makes sense. Colton can take the 3C spot and then help on PP2.

Coyle was brought in for the size, grit, and intangibles so could also see the Avs sticking with him.

No, it really doesn’t make sense.

1. Colton sucks at center. He wants to be a center but he’s bad at it and Bednar doesn’t like him at center.

2. Colton doesn’t pretty kill. Coyle does.

3. Coyle is the #1 PKer and faceoff guy. Valuable player for Colorado.

Capwages has them with about 2M in space with 19 players on their roster. So if they do nothing else, they can dress a 21 player roster and remain compliant.

My guess would be Landeksog does the Mark Stone special and goes on LTIR until playoffs. That would give them about 9M in space with 5 roster spots to fill. That would be very doable.

Not entirely true. His "best" season (23-24 and 40 points), he played center primarily with Wood and then a revolving door of LOC, Parise, Drouin, Lehky, Tatar, Nuke, Kivi. Also had the Avs 2nd best FO% that year behind Rojo (3rd if you count Mikko taking Nates offhanded FO's).

Im with you on PK side and the value Coyle brings there, but I wouldnt say Colton "sucks" at center. Bednars reluctance to commit to him is obviously a thing though. But also Coyle is set up for disappointment coming from Marchand/Lindholm or Marchand/Debrusk to whatever we give him.

The issue with moving Girard is that he has 2 years left with a $5m cap hit, and it's hard to even find a replacement 2nd pairing caliber D for that cap hit that is plausibly available for what the Avs have to offer.

The other issue is calling Girard a "2nd pairing caliber D", which he only is intermittently. In competitive season, he's an awfully expensive 3rd pairing caliber D playing on the 2nd pairing.

And maybe that's not giving Girard enough credit, but I just no longer see what role he serves on this team. The offensive numbers are not there, and the defensive eye test is failed far too often.

The issue is finding a team that would have interest in an injury prone charmin soft smurf who gets wrecked in the playoffs and is offensively challenged while sporting a 5M caphit. In addition he has had personal issues with alcohol / substance abuse.

Whatever Girard is, whoever the Avs try to get to replace him should probably at least be a 2nd pairing caliber D, since that's where he's going to need to play. Preferably, it would be someone who can anchor the 2nd pairing, since Manson will probably miss half the season again with injuries and Malinski isn't there yet. With the cap going up, I'm not sure any of the good UFAs are going to be cheaper than Girard's $5m, so it's hard to afford them. And if it's not a UFA, I'm guessing the other team is going to want more in return than the Avs even have to offer right now.

Must suck to have a smurf as your best d.

Girard is criminally underrated here. He is 100% a mid to high end 2nd pairing dman and even a first pairing on garbage teams. His salary is great too since it will cost you minimum that to replace him with a worse player.

Most likely Ross Colton and Miles Wood. Colton was injured during the playoffs and Wood was a healthy scratch once Landeskog returned. Both are rumored to want to be moved, Colton wants to play center and Wood is probably not happy being relegated to the 4th line/nacho duty. Those 2 open 6.5 mil.

There's also been rumors on Sam Girard, but that's less likely.
Whats the cost on Colton?

No one wants D men that size making 5 million a year unless they are named Quinn Hughes or Lane Hutson. Small D cores dont win. They cant stay healthy and its just not the way to build a team.

I'm with you. Have been for years. Send Girard away. He's a liability out there in the playoffs.

Nobody is going to take Miles Wood unless he comes with plenty of futures attached, why would anyone otherwise?

I mean... The same things were just said about Kreider as well.

Look at where the cap is going as well. $115M in 3 years, $2.5M is going to be pennies. I could see a few teams needing depth and looking for a veteran to have interest in him.

*This isn't me suggesting he has positive value. He doesn't. But he definitely does not have "Plenty of futures attached" negative value either. Dudes basically $1M overpaid, we're talking like a 3-4th rounder as the piece to take on that extra money.

It's the term that's the kicker for Wood. He has 4 years left.

Yeah, but also with the cap going up the way it is it becomes less and less of an issue with each passing year.

Like, if he's $1M overpaid today, by year 3 that's probably like $500k overpaid.

Quite frankly, and I think we're already seeing it with this Kreider trade... Some teams are going to struggle to get enough salary on their team.

You can ship him off to Buffalo...I know a lot of fans in the Buff have wanted him for years...4th liner in Colorado...2nd liner in Buffalo.

Thankfully he put up historic offensive production. Had he put up Girard numbers, he wouldn’t be a Hab! Girard is a total liability when its playoff time. Not what a playoff contender needs. Plays scared.
