Because regardless if you use Cap wages or Puck Pedia Colorado has less then 2 million in space.

Cap wages has them at 1.9

Puck Pedia has them at 1.2.

They don't have a ton of room either way.

you got to think they want to clear a little space so who goes?

Most likely Ross Colton and Miles Wood. Colton was injured during the playoffs and Wood was a healthy scratch once Landeskog returned. Both are rumored to want to be moved, Colton wants to play center and Wood is probably not happy being relegated to the 4th line/nacho duty. Those 2 open 6.5 mil.

There's also been rumors on Sam Girard, but that's less likely.

Isn't Colton better on the wing?

That's always been my impression

I mean.... I'm sure they'll do something. But they have almost a full roster already.

12F, 5D, and a Goalie right now. The only RFA is Malinski who they can squeeze down to like ~$1.25M and then they're good. O'Connor will start the year on LTIR and his $2.5M of LTIR space will fill the roster out with $800k guys.

They really dont have to do anything at all.

That being said, there's some speculation around both Wood and Colton being sent out. Wood probably has zero value if not negative value(Though not super negative IMO). Colton should fetch a pretty decent return though.

I’d be surprised if at least one of Colton, Wood, Girard, or Manson wasn’t traded.

And if the rumor about Necas being unhappy are true then he’s also on the block, but there are conflicting reports there…

I know at his age and with his his style (aka injury risk) the responsible thing is to listen if somebody is in on Manson…but he’s such a good playoff performer I have a hard time thinking the Avs would want to move him, with the amount there is riding on other geriatrics they’ve brought in like Nelson and Coyle to take a final stab or two at the apple before a truly facing the music of a serious retool.

Girard is interesting…I think he’s underrated a bit at this point. He’s a significant hole in the top four if he’s dealt. The idea of having our blueline depth chart needing to soak up another 21-22 minutes internally or by dumpster diving in free agency is pretty horrifying. There’s also no denying his post-season role and effectiveness can nosedive sharply depending on matchups.

Assuming nothing major (Girard, Necas), the most likely outcome:

Trade: Colton, Wood
Re-Sign: Malinski [RFA], Drouin, Johnson
Sign: 1-2 budget UFAs (Brazeau, Gaudette, etc.)

Cap wages gas them with 4D and $1.9M in space with a 12/4/2 roster

Filling out roster with 4 players F/3D for $5M puts them $3M over

If they trade $4M in Colton and fill with a $1M player they would be cap compliant.

Puckpedia has them at $1.2m with the extra defender (Middleton) in the mix.

Lehky-MacK-Necas
Landy-Nelson-Nuke
Colton-Coyle-Wood
LOC-Drury-Kelly

Toews-Makar
Girard-Manson
Middleton-???

LOC is on LTIR so that gives an additional $2.5m in cap to start, giving the Avs roughly $3.7m to fill the last two playing positions and a scratch

Malinski ($1.75mx2)
Bardakov ($868k)

Scratch:
MacDonald ($775k)

This is roughly $3.4m used giving them $0.3m in cap space without doing anything.

Trade Colton, bury Wood in the minors if they have to, trade him if possible, and fill out the roster with cheap guys. As pointed out above though, they don't even have to do the above to be cap compliant.

They can use their '27 and '28 draft picks to upgrade at the deadline.

The Avs haven't run a 23 man roster in years.

Cap Wages does not have Middleton on the team and he will be at $775k.

Like I said. Middleton + Malinski they'll fit for for under that $1.9M. Then O'Connor starts the year on LTIR and his $2.5M covers 3 guys at $800-850k to fill out the roster.

I set them at 22 13/7/2. 12/4/2 costing C-2 on capwages means you need 4 positions

As i said...you fill the 4 roster positions with $5M salary which means a few are at league min/ELC and 1 could be near $2M

13/7/2 is C-2+5= C+3. You trade Colton at 4 for a replacement at 1 means C+3-4+1=C

I feel like theyre basically done. Sure some wiggle room for a trade deadline acquisition will be nice, so see ya Wood for nothing, Colton for a middle/low pairing D, and then maybe pair Manson and a 2nd for an upgrade in him if he shows hes always hurt or cant hang.

Colton+Manson ($4+$4.5M) for Hamilton with 20% retention ($7.2M) and a 2nd - Gain $1.3M in cap space
Wood for conditional whatever - Gain $2.5M in cap space
Sign RFA Malinski to $1-1.125ish.
Re-sign Drouin for $2.5M
Re-sign EJ for $1M
Use 2027 1st and/or 2nd to upgrade middle 6 if needed at the deadline.

Lehkonen-MacKinnon-Necas
Landeskog-Nelson-Nichushkin
Drouin-Coyle-?
LOC-Drury-Kelly

Toews-Makar
Girard-Hamilton
Malinski-Johnson

Wood A
Wood B

Rotate AHLers/ELC's for their 9 games in when injuries happen.

Outside of an injury to a big name, its nice to have the roster mostly locked up. Can do something like above if they feel a big name like Hamilton can hang on for 3 more years or dangle Necas out there on the market and get a big return for him. Necas for Robertson lol.

They need to move out pieces that aren't working, so as others have mentioned Wood and Colton are prime candidates. I think they need to upgrade on Girard, and will need to move him out to do so. These moves should open up enough space to create some change on the roster. I personally would love for them to sign Gavrikov if they do upgrade on Girard, but it would be hard to coordinate all of that.

I'm consistently in the minority but I think its time to trade Girard

He does not move the needle for us in the playoffs, and the mistakes are more glaring than the highlights are. I can deal with Josh Manson sucking in the regular season and lighting it up in the playoffs - I can't deal with the opposite from Sam Girard any longer

So IMO, Colton, Girard and probably Wood can go. We just have to replace Girard with someone who's a better playoff fit.

Devils fans are definitely interested in Colton, mostly because he’s from jersey and mentioned being a devils fan before. Devils have their own cap dumps to situate first though.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Devils are interested in Coyle if he is available. There were rumors at the trade deadline that Fitzgerald tried to get him from the Bruins before they traded him for Mittelstadt, Zellers and a 2nd.

Is there any chance they trade Coyle so Colton can play center?

Plus Coyle makes more.
In a bubble it makes sense. Colton can take the 3C spot and then help on PP2.

Coyle was brought in for the size, grit, and intangibles so could also see the Avs sticking with him.
