What Went Wrong With The Canucks?

Petterrsson just seems off to me, always has. He doesn't seem like the kind of leader you win with. And when you're the #1 center and a 100 pt. player, you have to be a leader.

And the whole drama with he and Miller obviously killed the season.

Demko injured for most of the year. Hughes injured. Not that surprising.

It would be easier to talk about what didn't go wrong for the Canucks this year.

It was an absolute gong show and a reminder how delicate an nhl roster can be.
Pretending like last year wasn’t an outlier of the last 10 Canuck seasons is classic Canuck fan cope. You’re back to where you’re used to being, why is this a surprise? Last year was the surprise.

In addition to all of the other things, Tocchet is not a good coach and just completely kills offensive generation

I posted this earlier today on the Nucks board but here is the left wing position evolution since management took over..

tanner pearson --> jake debrusk
vasili podkolzin --> dakota joshua
nils hoglander ~~ nils hoglander
tyler motte --> drew oconnor
matt highmore --> max sasson

Its better but not almost three years of transactions better.

This is the exact same team we were when management started but now Horvat is Hronek, Miller is Mpetey, Demko is broken, Ep40 is awol and Boeser is walking for free.

Last year was indeed the outlier.

We go a decade without being able to draft a defenseman to save our lives then as soon as we trade for them, the ones we panic drafted all look exceptional, go figure.

I see a thread about the Rangers but not one about the Canucks (a mod can merge this thread with an existing one if there is one).

They had a very good season last season. Yes, they probably overachieved and they had a high PDO, but I don't think their downfall can be attributed to regression to the norm alone.

It seems the locker room was a mess for much of the season. I don't think Pettersson's play improved a great deal after the Miller trade.

Where do they go from here?

The court ruled for Aquilini, on January 10, 2008. The court held that there was no legal partnership between Aquilini, Beedie, and Gaglardi, and that McCaw was free to sell the team to anyone he wished. Aquilini and Gaglardi knew each other from the many joint family events they had attended over the years.

We can break down the series of events that lead to the demise of this season which has also altered their future, but i don't think you are interested in a genuine conversation.

Your first mistake is assuming that I'm a canucks fan.

Injuries + a healthy dose of hubris for their defensive depth choices the first half of the season.

I think the second half of the season was informative for management. I think they actually have very good depth in goaltending, defensive, and their bottom-nine forwards.

The big decision will be what to do with Elias Pettersson. If he can return to form, they will be just fine. If they can trade him for a good return, they will be fine. If they don't trade him and he is his diminished self again, they will be in tough—or—if they trade him for pennies like they did Miller.

IMO, the Canucks would be wise to move on from Pettersson and Boeser like they did with Miller. The air in that lockerroom needs to be changed. Build your new core entirely around Hughes.

Yeah, I realize they felt moving on from Miller and keeping EP was the right move, but he's toxic as well in his own way. How can anyone on that team look at him with any measure of respect? He's a weak link.

quinn hughes is on an island

pretty obvious they need depth, talent, and were a one hit wonder

amazing what hughes can do tho

Horvat Miller Petterson and Hughes and Demko on bargain contracts. And they managed one playoff appearance with that core.

The excess value from those 5 should have been enough to surround them with the best depth in the league.

1) Miller and Pettersson imploding.

2) Demko injured/struggling, Silovs terrible as backup.

3) Terrible OT record.

4) Bad luck with injuries.

5) Management got the defensive group wrong in the summer and didn’t fix it until acquiring Markus Pettersson 50 games into the season.

I think their only option is to go through Hughes and ask him what he thinks they should do.

If they can't keep Hughes happy, then there's no program worth salvaging at this point.
