What was the Point of Benching Brayden?

It is not a question more just looking for opinions.

Cooper certainly held him to task. I wonder if this was a first offence?
Have you considered that this is standard policy around the league since day one? The players know there’s rules in place. Guys get scratched and benched for missing team meetings before.

This isn’t just a Cooper and Point thing. It’s happened to Fiala, Ovechkin, Nylander, Drouin, etc.

Reinhart literally had a front row seat from the bench the entire game without recording any TOI.
Sabres' Reinhart benched for late arrival

Here’s Cernak: Tampa Bay Lightning’s Erik Cernak scratched vs Islanders after missing team meeting

You make exceptions to team rules and then you're going down a slippery slope instantly. Cooper was right to bench Point. I'm not sure how there's even an "opinion" to argue here. Everyone in the room knows the rules, everyone is expected to follow them.

I am surprised that Jon Cooper would bench his number one centre before inter-division game! I think it took balls but what does it accomplish? He is also coaching him in the 4 Country Cup.
It obviously did not sit well with the Bolts who laid an egg rather than responding to their coaches decisive move.
They call it, “accountability.”

He does have a lot of experience and has won the cup multiple times. I do believe he knows what works and what doesn’t.
I am not questioning his decision I guess I wish I knew more about the circumstances leading to such harsh consequences.

I have no clue if it is standard policy. I know Bruce Boudreau said Ovi was late for a meeting and he fined him but looking back now he thinks it was a mistake not to bench hi,.
I would think there is a one or two strikes policy before a benching but that is just me.

I said this before but Bruce Boudreau fined Ovi for missing a meeting . He did not bench him. I feel Point may have done this before and this is a cumulative punishment but obviously pure speculation.

He misses a team meeting i believe it was and you just say it's water under the fridge, but then another player, some bum like Chaffee misses it and you scratch him, he can file a grievance over it and then the NHLPA is on that and then there's some more crap everyone has to deal with.

I'm sure Point knew that would happen and is fine with it and if hes upset with anyone, it's himself..

Eh, won't be the last time this happens. The Flames scratched Monahan and Gaudreau for something similar

I’d think it’s a team policy; he might have been fined prior, we just don’t know.

So glad he plays in a market like TB versus the absolute nonsense he would've faced if that happened on a team like Toronto. Could you imagine if Marner or Nylander missed a meeting? In any case, he can't have another strike against him but it doesn't seem to be indicative of anything deeper. Criticizing the benching is just absurd, this is the pros.

Betting on a strong game from him tonight.

How is this even a thread? It was the right decision.

If employees are held to different standards that's typically not good for team morale, in any workplace.

Highly doubt the team played poorly in protest of the decision.

I think it is funny people ask "how is this a thread". If they do I think they should be benched. It is a thread because it made the news! TSN did 12 minutes on the Leafs being booed on Saturday night. I submit that is more ridiculous than me asking for opinions on if missing a team meeting is worthy o being benched.

Noted! Cooper did the right thing.

I wonder if Point took the benching as hard as the OP did?
I am really not taking this that hard. I was interested in your opinions but I would definitely bench you for sarcasm! haha

I mean players get treated differently based on their skill level all the time. If a 4th liner blows his coverage there's a chance he's healthy scratched next game. If a first liner blows his coverage maybe he gets a talking to.

Same with employees. The better performing employees is for sure going to get more leeway than a bottom 10% employee.

But that’s not the exact case here with Point.

Without full context, you can’t objectively assign blame to a particular player cause there’s 5 guys and a goalie on the ice. Potentially you can have multiple offenders at fault, so it’s not always a single player to blame.

In most cases a plug will lose out to better competition. That’s not on the player, that’s on coaching. Elite players will feast on weaker comp, that’s very common and normal in any league.

Missing a meeting or being late isn’t a direct comparison to the bolded. It’s a bad example.
