Speculation: What to do with Jumbo

4th line hemmed the Habs in and almost scored on the 1 shift Gally had with them

Really shows how useless Joe is at this point

fourth line has been a strength most of the season until Jumbo. What would Masai do? Think we know the answer.

Yeah, that play in the 1st when the puck came to him behind the Habs net

He was all alone, fumbled it 3 times and then threw a pass right out of the zone

His hands were the only thing he had left and now they are gone

Great career, but he’s insurance now.

As long as he has very limited usage in the 3rd/4th line, i think he is fine. He makes league min and should retire after this season.
We can still make good use of his great leadership and wealth of experience, on the bench not on the ice.

It’s just tough to tell all the players that it’s a meritocracy abs you earn your once time while also giving it to a player who so obviously doesn’t deserve it.

I think the top players are fine with it, since Joe is so likeable, but the guys who lose ice time to him probably can’t help by be annoyed.

He does deserve it. He’s a legendary player that earned a NMC at league min. He earned the right to dictate if he’s on the roster.

Lots of reasons to not want him on the ice, but fringe NHLers pouting because he hasn’t earned it is not one of them.

Eggxactly.
If our "non starters" are miffed about not having ice time, then they need to practice and work harder. Pouting accomplishes nothing.
GrandDaddy Joe has payed his dues and i honestly do not believe that we have players in our roster that are angered by the fact that he gets ice time and they don´t. If that is not the case, those players need to do some soulsearching.
Joe came to Toronto to win a Cup. The players need to be ALL on the same page, with the same amount of eyes on the prize.
If someone still has doubts, they should ask Bogo.

The trouble now is Joe came to TO to win a cup, but we also want to win a cup, and those two things seem at odds.

There is only one question, the rest noise: does Joe bring us closer to the prize? Right now how anyone can answer yes escapes me.

We’re all in this year, deference and pedigree are irrelevant.

It’s not the fringe NHLers that I’m worried about. It’s the young guys learning that it’s not just about playing well. It’s the guys that are better than Joe sitting out when we’re supposed to be trying to win.

If we’re not doing everything we can to win games, trading away draft picks was a strange strategy.

On the ice? No.
On the bench and in the locker room? Yes.

His leadership and experience are a very valuable resource.
A Cup winning team needs multiple leaders. Joe is one of them.

Look at our lineup now, we have tons of experience and leadership. We just added another Captain for instance. Plus, our young core has matured, they aren’t kids anymore, they are clearly ready to take the reigns. Who doesn’t love Joe? Also, who cares.

Leave him in the room then, just not on the ice.

What he did in the past is irrelavent to fringe players right now. If I was a fringe player currently better than jumbo ofc i'd be pissed.

He’s straight up not an asset to this team on the ice. In fact the more time he gets the more of a liability he is. He has no business being on the PP whatsoever. He cannot move fast enough, he cannot generate chances, he cannot score, he cannot drive play. He’s hardly even a passenger right now.

It sucks to say because he looked like he was going to be at least decent for us, but I guess that was only when propped up by Marner and Matthews. The reality is that he’s probably a great guy for the room and a nice presence for our young players, but that’s where his usefulness ends.

What we are likely to see is him continuing to occupy a roster space over players that could provide something tangible for us. Whether it’s scoring, hitting, possession, or just energy, there are players we have in the wings right now that could make an impact in his spot.

When we have Foligno and Nylander in the lineup that now means someone is going to sit. Robertson likely as the first candidate, and then someone like Engvall after that. Then we also have Nash who could be a player for us as well. Any of those three unquestionably add more on ice effectiveness than Joe does right now but I really have a hard time seeing him come out of the lineup.

I guess we will see. Overall I do not like the makeup of our bottom six going into the playoffs. Those third and fourth lines are going to need to provide physicality, speed, and will have to contribute on the scoreboard. The third line could be terrific now that Foligno is on his way. It all depends who we deploy in those roles.
