Richards is on pace for 58 points this season, and his point production has declined each year. It will only get worse as he gets older and it's not worth it to retain him only to get hit with a recapture penalty later on.

McDonagh, Zucc, Brassard, Stepan, Kreider, etc. Not worried about the PP.

Well it would be nice to just get rid of Richards, continue playing with 2nd line centers, and just wait to draft a legit 1C. But Sather will never commit to that.

So instead the solution is to get rid of Richards' contract and give out a bigger one? I don't get that.

Should we be drafting centers, looking under every rock, phoning in as much as we can to see if players like Kadri and Grigorenko have suddenly become very unpopular at home? Of course. But even slam dunk selections in the places where we will draft will take years to develop.

A lot of this hinges on the St. Louis mess and (as always), the philosophical question of whether you think this team can be something in the near term or not. I think it can or, at least, with the lack of interesting pieces in the prospect cupboard it's our angle. A Stastny contract, even a bad one, is my preferred middle ground between a 38-year-old Brad Richards on the bus in Hartford and giving up on a decent window.

Not concerned with Girardi, being that the numbers offered from NYR and what Girardi wants is a few $100,000.

I don't know if hockey fans understand this, I'm sure many of them here do, but typically, a team should build from their goaltender out. We have a top three goaltender in the NHL, a fairly sound defense, at the very least we just need to add someone who can finish and produce offensively.

What the hell is Sather doing? The same thing he always does. It's worked so well to this point...why change?

The dream of drafting a true #1C (that we can count on to be a #1C) went out the window the day we gave Lundqvist signed his contract. That keeps us out of the top-10 in the draft for the next decade.

Any #1C this team runs with either is brought in from the outside (trade or UFA), or getting extremely lucky (the quantity of #1Cs taken in the modern NHL draft outside the top-10 is near non existent).

So, that being said, the best the Rangers can realistically hope for is to grab guys like Statsny... Mid-tier #1Cs (because top #1Cs never make it to market).

Unless they were to trade up for a draft pick that allowed them to select such a player. Getzlaf was the 19th pick, Giroux was the 22nd, Kopitar was the 11th pick, Oshie was the 24th pick.

There are high end centers out there in drafts. Rangers just have to get proactive about identifying one in the draft and moving assets to get him.

Problem is now a days with scouting and information progressing to where it is less and less of those guys are slipping through the cracks, but it would be nice for the FO to finally hit on a guy, preferably a center, that can be an impact player soon after being drafted.

You act like they won't be getting anything back if they trade Cally and Girardi.

you guys (not ^you user of conditional "if") all* act like you can see the future. let's all freak out before anything happens. Flaming off of baseless speculation. That Ranger way... :shakehead :loony:

Kopitar
Giroux
Krejci
Datsyuk
Zetterberg
Pavelski
Getzlaf
Benn
O' Reilly (whom this board is just enamored with)

What do they have in common? None of them are top 10 picks. That's just a flimsy way of excusing this organization's total inability to draft offensive talent.

so what youre saying is no more defensive dmen in the first round?

Badass tat pld!!!

If think Martin St.Louis Coming here would be wonderful and there's a couple worthwhile guys here in FL(with the new "ex" NYR fan owner) that could make a difference.

I also think this thread should not only be stickied, but on the main boards as well.

I prefer to keep Richards unless somebody can suggest to me a viable replacement at 1C. Stepan has yet to do it consistently and Stastny is no better and will cost more.

You keep Richards in the offseason and you are stuck with him the entire way. No thanks.

I'm saying I'd move prospects and picks and maybe even a roster player to get up in the draft for a guy like Sam Bennett.

And I'd certainly trade something even for a guy like Jared McCann.

Boston is the just about the only team the last 6 years to be built from the goalie out. This is now the exception not the rule. Every other winner had better forwards than defense or goalie.

I disagree with this. Pittsburgh is the glaring case, but LA was astonishingly good on D and in goal. Chicago had average goaltending for both their cups, but Keith/Seabrook/Hjalmarsson are as good as you'll get in the NHL, and they have very solid, defensively solid forwards.

To continue with my concerns, can you imagine if Callahan or Girardi manages to get hurt before the deadline?

I know it is a waiting game here, seeing who will blink first, but Sather better know what he is doing.

With Dolan associated with this team, you just know GOD hates us, so anything that can go wrong, will go wrong. Didn't Felton get hurt the night before the Knick tried to trade him? (Or was that JR Smith?)

The point is Karma is not a friend. The next week looms large for the direction this team will take over the next few years...

On a side note, did anyone get a look at Ron Duguay's threads last night. He went for the peacock look- of course he managed to pull is off with the flowing locks and thrush of chest hair...

Someone should post some pics of his outfits. Just awesome...

We saw Sather coming into The Gaden last night around 6. Came right in the new front entrance and went up the escalator, which I found a bit surprising.

I yelled "Get it done Glen!", he just smiled and waved.

He looked good BTW, so if he was having some health issues that would appear to be behind him.
