Rage, as that's what you feel while driving through Atlanta.
The Thrashers existed for eleven seasons. They qualified for the playoffs once, getting swept in the first round. Seems like a good reason why people wouldn't want to attend Thrashers games.
They’re just kind of an aside. The point is that the failure isn’t a once off.
It’s kind of weak to blame an ownership group when their 2nd and 4th worst years of attendance came before that ownership group, and their numbers actually went up when they took over.
That’s fine. Population only matters if people want to attend the sport. Atlanta gets great attendance to Football and Soccer, but hockey clearly doesn’t have the same following there. It’s not that Atlanta isn’t a sports city. They’re just not really a hockey city. Lots of sports have failed in Edmonton too and they’re as die hard of sports fans as you’ll find. They just prefer hockey.
If we can go back far enough into history, I'm sure there are a ton of random teams from way back when to reference. Again, if we're factoring in the Flames, then Quebec has failed twice as well. The Oilers had a 13 year sellout streak (until the pandemic ended it), during which they had a 10 year stretch without making the playoffs. When over half the teams are going to miss the playoffs, you probably shouldn’t expand to a market where missing the playoffs will result in the team folding
For a tribute to the teams, I like Firebirds.I'm on board with paying tribute to the two previous franchises by combining their names. The Atlanta Flamers.
Or Phoenix. Flames. Bird. Symbol of rebirth. It's only the city seal as they city's mascot.Flames + Thrashers = Firebirds
This is the only way

As a new Atlanta NHL team becomes more likely, should this organization resurrect the Thrashers branding , colors, identity or forge ahead with something new?
As discussed in the Atlanta thread on the biz forum, there really isnt a better name/ mascot than the Thrashers.
Additionally, Millenials who will comprise a plurality of the Season Ticket base has strong nostalgia for The Thrashers and incorporating a modernized version of the team’s branding/jerseys / identity will do alot to galvanize support for the team
If for whatever reason The Thrashers name and identity cannot be leveraged here are some suggestions for potential team names
1. Olympics
2. 96’ers
3. Stags/Bucks (we have alot of deer)
4. Cutthroats (decent trout fishing in the Chattahoochee)
5. Terminus HC
6. Firebirds
7. Raptors (as in birds of prey)
8. Kudzu
9. Paladins
10. Gladiators (but in the Knights color scheme)
And then when phoenix is ready for a team again. They move them to become the Phoenix PhoenixOr Phoenix. Flames. Bird. Symbol of rebirth. It's only the city seal as they city's mascot.
Which would be a little ironic since they'd be playing outside the city proper this time, but otherwise, it's as perfect as it gets.
Just like every other time.. oh wait…The "Anyway, we're going to be moved to Québec City in about 15 years max" Arena
Not as long as someone like Bettman is in power. Just keep expanding into deserts, canyons and savannahs.Just like every other time.. oh wait…
The Oilers have been around 52 years if you count the WHA years, 45 of them n the NHL. The Nylander teams that have been around for 60+ years are the "original 6" teams. If we can go back far enough into history, I'm sure there are a ton of random teams from way back when to reference. Again, if we're factoring in the Flames, then Quebec has failed twice as well.
Come on...you know the history with the ownership. They were absolutely the reason why they moved. Here:
Owners to blame for Thrashers' failure
Also, the numbers were up the year they took over because that was the ONE year they made the playoffs. The attendance got lower every year they owned them.
And your comparison to the Oilers is awful. The Oilers have been around for like 60 years, had the best player to ever play the sport on the team for years, and at one point won 4 Stanley Cups in a row. Thrashers never won a single playoff game in their entire existence.
