Unfortunately Detroit is one of the least desired locations FAs to sign with. Holland mentioned this 10 years ago after a bust FA summer saying no one wanted to come.
We were also shit 10 yrs ago lol

We had Hasek,Hull ,robitaille etc.. who wanted to come here ... once we get good again players will come

With the cap rising are all of our bad contracts easier to move? I heard Bennett is likely going for 7M/7 and that's suppose to be like 5M adjusted to today's cap? Therefore Copp, Compher, Holl Chiarot aren't even unmovable anymore?
If we don’t want them no one else will especially holl 😂

I’d say we’d have to eat money on chiarot .. 50% and a contender will value him at around 2 mill .... get another team involved around 1 mill no way an Edmonton , Toronto etc.wouldn’t jump on him

I pray joe sakic is longing for jt compher if Nelson leaves 😂 at 4 mill if we retain I think he jumps ... we’ll have cheap contracts for a few yrs we can retain $

Based on Holland's choices 10 years ago, I'd half expect Marner to be waiting outside Yzerman's door on July 1 like this:

4447691965_6273a5d3f0.jpg
And I’d expect larkin to be next to him begging him to sign him and Yzerman telling him to stfu and there’s no way he’s giving him 15 million he wants and for this to be the outcome with marner running away 🤣

Just because a team has plenty of space available to make a crazy offer doesn't mean he'll go there because of it.

If those who read between the lines are right, and Marner wants to leave Toronto for quieter pastures, we absolutely should make a run for him, and I would argue that if we offered him something like 7yr/12.5m (just spitballing here), Marner might be willing to take that and come here.
Teams like Anaheim and San Jose are exactly the 'quieter pastures' and Anaheim appears to have an improving roster...Maybe a very good team sooner than later.

Make the playoffs get ousted year by year round 1 like the kings and draft in no man’s land for 5 yrs? I’m interested in winning cups

Want to go for marner? Cool .. trade debrincat for another player of importance ... we’re never going to win cups with marner debrincat raymond on the top 6 wings (kane would be back for next year and god knows he’d probably want to return the year after as well)

Get rid of debrincat we get rid of kane
Aren't we all interested in winning Cups?

What elite franchise players have we drafted who are on the team, or is in the system?

While real gud thus far we haven't been that good via the draft that will see us contenders anytime soon...As I mentioned earlier - at the rate we're going DBoss will be close to retirement.

Well have we ever drafted in the top 3? We got lucky we got raymond and seider and in fact I’d say we probably tried to win too soon. Outside the obvious draft where we went from dead last to #4 which worked out

Well it takes time for the kids to develop and get nhl experience. Raymond and seider are getting better. Kasper & edvinsson just got year 1 and we have a boatload or kids coming and soon might exceed expectations. No one thought zetterberg and datsyuk would become what they did. Not saying anyone we have will be as good but we sure hope so

Well in that case deal larkin if he’s not better and target a byfield if Holland wants him. He’d fit our timeline better and we can use bigger bodies. Larkin was never going to be a #1 cup winning Center ... is what it is

Can’t force marner to come here .. outside him there’s no one else in free agency until Connor next year if he makes it. We need to make trades and even then no one’s giving us a rantanen that’s locked up longterm. We need to target younger guys who are waiting to explode in the right environment

We're are probably two years out from, just a prospect standpoint:

Debrincat - Larkin - Raymond
Mazur - Kasper - Brandsegg-Nygard
Lombardi - Danielson - Compher
Watson/Soderblom/Rasmussen

(OPEN) - Seider
Edvinsson - ASP
Johansson - Johansson

Cossa
(OPEN)
Augustine

Just from a conservative standpoint and no one 'breaking out' and kind of lowballing them coming into the league with our prospects, etc. - the 2027 season starts like this essentially at this point...

If Danielson follows a similar path as Kasper, our C depth is crazy. It might be a 100pt 1C - but three 60-80pt Cs, two who which are pretty damn good defensively is incredible.

If Lombardi is able to pull a Hudler, and overcome his smaller statue and play C at the next level as an offensive-first generator instead of sliding to 3rd or 4th line wing - crazy depth.

This does not take into account Buchelnikov (21), Finnie (19), Kilskinen (19) - who could in the next two years all come in and breakout and push out a starter mentioned above. Also, you have 4th line grinder/pests in the making in Red Savage (22), and Dylan James (21). And the most obvious addition to our team is Brady Cleveland who will already be on his way to his first Norris in two years.

The long and the short of it - even if we do nothing and the kids mature like they generally need to - we have an absurdly deep team with a lot of youth, speed, 'tough to play against', '200ft', etc. etc. up and down throughout the lineup.

Any addition we make in the next year or two, needs to generally upgrade over the natural spot where these kids are going to start slotting - or we need to package these kids into an honest upgrade at the spot because we're going to logjam in the middle six pretty bad

God help me if Watson’s still here in 2 years 😂 ... also red savage wasn’t offered a contract , he’s gone

Can’t see mazur as second liner in two years, and if Soderblom is on the 4th he’s likely gone

haha - truthfully - the bottom line is a rather shrug emoji. Its mostly going to be a bunch of grinders mixed in with tryhards. Point being, it's a super easy line to fill out in FA, random prospects, etc.

I wouldn't sleep on Mazur. He often was the most noticeable guy on the Griffs for a long time and comes out of that same kind of skilled, quick, tough guy pest mold and could surprise. The point being is that our middle six is going to have A LOT of dudes mixed into it

over paying a low cap hit isnt bad , i want this guy on the roster . trade a pik to negotiate now . gets team bigger/tougher and only age 27 so sign for bout 4 years . this is an important player type needed on wings roster that wont be a big cap hit
I'm pretty convinced that replacing some milquetoast with equally skilled unpleasantness would help this team a lot.

The only thing with building purely through the draft and waiting for guys to develope there is a culture factor. Look at Larkin alone, he's having a hard time constantly missing the playoffs and goes to the first nations and legit proves himself on the American team getting time on the first line..

Like you said look at Dats and Z they took time to mature and call me crazy but I think we already have them in Raymond and Kasper who I think I massively underrated and is only going to get better and better he had a rough injury to start and the adjustment to NA was probably something too but look at him now after the coaching change and still going strong at the world's.Then there's Seider on D who's our #1 for now. I think it's a matter of time before Edvinsson surpasses him..

Raymond, Kasper, Ed, Seider are going to be studs and there's still MBN who looks like at the very least is gonna be a huge pain in the ass for opposing teams

ASP is coming with high expectations.
Lombardi and Buch are very intriguing and could very well be something of significance..

According to Lebrun, Vegas and Florida are the primary teams Marner has interest in :(.
Seriously? Why would it be otherwise? I can't fathom why anyone would think there was a chance he would sign here. He would probably do pretty well on either of those teams as the passenger that he is but that overpriced wimp would be more of the same here as he is in Toronto. I truly understand why those fans despise the "core 4".

Which players? I don't see any bright side of us not being in the running for a 100 point two way forward in his prime :(

It would likely make it near impossible for Florida to keep any of Bennett, ekblad, or Marchand. Vegas would almost definitely have to move Hague, and probably someone like barbashev, and also be out of the competition for other upgrades.

Yeah, nearly all of us would prefer Marner but if/when marner goes elsewhere it seems foolish to dismiss whatever moves might become available to us from it.

I mean I agree, just sucks knowing no star players will ever want to sign in Detroit.

I know my response was terse. And that's because I ****ing despise Marner. His pluses and glaring minuses have been discussed at length here. That aside, you have to win or show real promise to get top FAs to come to you.

If we're going to dish for a big name my hope is bringing Kyle Connor home next year. He would be a better investment than Marner in my book and there would be a much better chance to land him via the home state/buddies with Larkin angle.

They will want to sign with us when we are competitive and in our competitive window. On any real measurable: contract, length, control/role on team, city/market, etc. etc., competitiveness, there are better options for him. We can't offer the 8th year, we probably won't offer as much as a team as CLB would offer, we aren't as fun as VGS, LA, etc. - we aren't nearly as good with a chance to win as FLA, CAR etc. - even our 'young talent' isn't as good as SJS, CHI, etc.

When we are in 2030, and are sitting on a 10M open slot for another guy...after getting bounced in the ECFs and looking for the final piece to put us over the top; I think the list of potential folks would be quite long looking to sign up.

It's better for us to plug the Top 6F spot, next year Kyle Connor hits at 29yos - and is a near perfect fit for us, coming off a 97pt 40g+ season and is from Michigan, grew up a Wings fan, passed through UM right around Larkin, etc. THAT is a big name FA where we have a punchers chance

I don't want to overpay again for mid tier players. More of the same. Bennett's numbers are similar to Compher he is just more physical and we will have to pay a hefty premium for that. We need stars. Especially on defense.

Lets hope Mazur's injury issues go the way that Kronwall's did and he is able to put together a solid NHL career. His ability to stay healthy is really the only thing I think that is going to hold him back.

Everyone on Florida is going to get PAID. Stay far away from Bennett and ekblad, they’d both be great additions on the short term but long term they would be issues. I still think trades are the best way to make this team better long term.
