why are you acting like im saying theyve already got a good defense when im talking about building the big bodied defense being the goal

And how are they doing that?

AlJo is a passable 4 but should really be a 5. His limiting factor is going to be his size.
Ed is our 2 but has potential for more.
Seider is our 1 but he needs help.

Now let’s look at the gaps:
Chiarot is at best a 5/6 being consistently overplayed.
Petry needs to retire. He might be a 7 on a good day.
Gus should never have been signed because it helped push the Maatta trade.
Holl isn’t even an NHLer.

Now here’s our top D prospects:
ASP might be a top 4 guy. He might just be Adam Boqvist. We don’t know yet. But he’s small so I’m not sure how he fits your big bodies defense idea.
AnJo is a giant question mark.
Wallinder looks like a bust.
Tuomisto is a bust.
Buium looks like a bust.
Viro is a career minor leaguer.

That looks like a pretty rickety fence.

Dudes, Mitch Marner is maybe scoring as much as Raymond if he becomes a wing. He’s not going to be the 102 point forward he was on Toronto while feeding 3 elite goal scorers. Matthews, Tavares and Nylander are all 40+ goal scorers at some time in their career. Nylander has 3 straight 40 goal season. Hell, Matthews is averaging 52 a season over the course of his career.

If he signs for 12.5 or higher people won’t stop bitching about how overpaid he is.
And this is my thought process as well. Signing a guy coming off a career year, in a contract year, on a stacked team to a monster contract isn't something I'm super confident about.

Might as well get Matthews too then. Trust me, Toronto is sick of him too! Lol!!!

D is the most glaring issue by far. Stevie needs to back up the brinks truck to Provorov's house. I'd go up to 8M (ideally 7-7.5M x 6-7 years) for him; the cap is rising and we desperately need a partner for Seider. Then trade for Risto, and a top-4 of Prov-Seider-Ed-Ristolainen suddenly looks meaner, tougher, and far

I hope NY Rangers will sign Marner, just because they have to get a new star, and then they have force a lot of cap out.

Yzerman trades just peanuts for Panarin to play with Kane, and we move on. Maybe Kreider comes at same package.
Yup whoever signs marner might have to be a target for us cause that team might have to shed good players to sign marner at low trade cost

Maybe not you but pretty much everyone here loved those signings and now shifting on Yzerman for doing it. Be careful what you wish for
If you look back at when each of those players were signed, most of the posters here balked at the term given to Compher and Copp. Saying that everyone loved those signings tells me you just dont remember the discussions when they were signed.

lmao Oh I remember the discussions cause I hated the signings day 1 (tarasenko included) and got a bunch of fools defending the moves ... my memories good don’t worry

That is not how I remember it, but my memory might not be as good as yours. There was definitely issues with the term and I still say that "love" is far too strong a word to describe the overall mood. No one stepping up to say otherwise might indicate that you are more right than I am.
Oh well, maybe someone will care enough to have a look. Been a long time since a free agent signing made me feel anything more than indifferent.

I don't remember a ton of love for them, either. I think Copp had more hope than Compher, largely on the season he just had,

Ppl thought our 2nd line Center issues were finally resolved which was laughable. Tarasenko would get us 30+ and you were stupid if you said he was finished 😂

I don’t care if ppl step up or not I don’t change opinions cause of what others say. I know what I recall cause I shat on those signings day 1. Justin holl was a signing where everyone shat on yzerman

Anyways your right we haven’t had a free agent signing of significance come here in forever. That’ll change when the kids come and we become a cup contender again

I'll eat a bit of crow here. I felt that our center depth was so bad that the Copp signing was justified. Didn't love the player, knew he'd age poorly but I figured he'd be at least a halfway decent 2/3C guy to provide stability. I preferred the alternatives at the time, but who knows if anyone besides Copp was actually willing to sign here.

Then when Copp was so bad I was in the "I'm not sure about running it back by trying the same thing with Compher, but at least he'll have to be better than Copp has been. And since Copp is so bad, we still need a reliable center." He's been worse.

A lot of posters had a pretty similar sentiment to me on these guys. It was obvious they'd be terrible at the ends of the deals but our team really needed the help so it was worth stomaching that if they could provide a few years of stability first. It's really unfortunate that they weren't good enough to provide that really for any period of time.

He was a 40 pt 3rd line guy who basically got 50 pts his contract year and everyone was convinced he was suddenly a 2nd line guy. Same with compher he played on a top team in Colorado and benefited by getting 50pt seasons. These guys were never top 6 Caliber players

Anyways it is what it is now. We’ll have to suffer with them on the bottom line for a few years . Hopefully if brock Nelson leaves Colorado maybe we can entice them to take back the missing piece jt compher 😂 make him available at 4 million I think they jump on it

I was downright mad that they signed so many bottom half of the lineup guys. Even on Day 1 it felt like an overreaction to the lack of depth the previous season.

So what's the real correlation you've got between Marner and those guys that makes sense?

Marner would have to pull a Pettersson type dive in production(-40pts) to start looking REAL bad. I think guys that hover around 90 points a season will get paid even if they're named Mitch Marner.

Wings might have expected too much of Copp/Compher with expanded roles. Is Mitch Marners role in Detroit really expanded more over than what he's doing in Toronto? His names in their big 4. He's getting Selke votes on that team almost annually. Anyone expecting him to deliver a cup himself year one is foolish, but I don't think too many people would be disappointed with him playing next to Larkin.

I prefer to stack up elite centers but, sometimes it's a bird in hand and Marners available for some money vs making a move for someone else plus the money. I might have to settle with two elite RW's and an elite PP, shucks.

We have Debrincat.
