Hmm... I'm not sure what this totally means.I can't see why anyone would expect any higher-end free agent to agree to any contract with a new team that fans would consider a "good contract." The cap is heading nowhere but up over the next three years ($113mm by 2027). This is also the one time in the professional lives of these players that they actually have leverage over their employers. Why would any of them do a fanbase a solid.
The complaints that you have about this year's crop in terms of value are the complaints you will have about next year's crop and the year after. Fans just need to be realistic about the basic nature of free agency and stop simultaneously complaining about the cost of players and the inability of the front office to improve the team.
Be happy with what they do?
I'll be happy when they sign players that contribute to winning/playoffs. They haven't done that in a very long time it's a very worthy complaint. The best value free agent last year was Talbot out of all the money spent. That's horse crap.
I'll be pumped though if Bennett leaves his perfect hockey situation for a little more money here and he morphs this team with our players into a cup contender/playoff appearance. I don't think it'll happen, which is why I'm whining about it on an internet forum to other fans, but if they do sign him I'll be rooting for him to succeed still too. I'm not jaded and weird like that yet.
I'd pay people for sure. Marner is the guy I'd like but after that I'm not looking for a significant overpay for anyone else available. (Just me personally) I think a team's scouting/drafting should be good enough to round out bottom line players, it's the elite players that put up points that are hard to stack up.
