Let McLellan experiment a bit. Just because it's not exactly how you'd do it doesn't mean it can't work.

Pretty clear they want Kasper at center btw.
Could have tried him on wing for a bit to get his confidence going or center kane and debrincat. I agree I expect kasper to be a center at one point unless we end up with a hagens

1. Get better scouts.
2. Petry and Holl are gone after this year, so that improves us without really doing anything.
3. Upgrade Gus and/or Chiarot.
4. Get some legit scoring wingers on the 2nd line.
5. ASP on D, Cossa in net next year.
6. Pray that Danielson, Mazur, Buch become studs

I would look to acquire a power forward or some forwards who use their size and grit. Lawson Crouse is a perfect fit, I know he’s not available per se but he would be the type I’d be after. They need guys who do tie dirty work and too many of their players play the perimeter

Two basic questions...

1) Is Wallinder in the same situation next season as Johansson is this season? Where he'll need to go through waivers to get to GR (and thus be in Detroit the entire yr).

Johansson <---------------> Wallinder
2019 Draft. <---------------> X
2020 SHL <---------------> 2020 Draft
2021 SHL <---------------> 2021 SHL
2022 GR <---------------> 2022 SHL
2023 GR <---------------> 2023 GR
2024 Detroit <---------------> 2024 GR
2025 Detroit <---------------> 2025 Detroit?

...

2) Nvm. I didn't realize Buchelnikov had signed a KHL extension through the 2025-26 season 🙄

capwages is saying he doesn't need to pass thru waivers until 26/27. So he can still move up and down next year.

Looking at the stats of the top 3 UFA LHD over the last 5 seasons (thank you, Grok):

*Attempt to summarize..
1) Chychrun is the only one with injury history...and Chychrun/Provorov are workhorses.
2) Chychrun is the best offensively, followed closely by Provorov.
3) Pettersson is the best defensively...Chychrun/Provorov about equally bad.
4) Not a huge difference between the 3 in terms of physicality...but it goes Chychrun-1, Pettersson-2, Provorov-3.

.....

Jakub Chychrun:
26
6'2, 215
304 games (79%)...........Last
24:36 avg TOI..........1st
175 pts (0.58 per/g)..........1st
-67 (-13.4 per/season)...........Last
452 hits (1.49 per/g)..........1st

Marcus Pettersson:
28
6'3, 200
371 games (96%)..........1st
20:45 avg TOI...........Last
99 pts (0.27 per/g)..........Last
+53 (+10.6 per/season)..........1st
490 hits (1.32 per/g)...........2nd

Ivan Provorov:
27
6-1, 201
368 games (96%)..........1st
24:46 avg TOI..........1st
169 pts (0.5 per/g)..........2nd
-51 (-10.2 per/season)...........2nd
466 hits (1.27 per/g)...........Last

.....

You want ASP with a sound defensive partner, so you basically have two options...

Edvinsson---Seider
Pettersson---ASP

or

Chychrun/Provorov---Seider
Edvinsson---ASP

.....

Assuming we could get any of the 3 (stupid assumption)...

I would take Provorov > Chychrun bc of the injury history.

Not sure if I would take Provorov > Pettersson. But I suspect Yzerman would prefer the better defender.

Pretty clear they want Kasper at center btw.

Joey has all the tools, Todd is trying to see if he can build Joey a toolbox. In the middle of a season, it's a lot easier to try to coach position and strategy to a kid with all of the tools then it is to teach Kasper how to drive the net and shoot.

Todd is trying to unlock Joey's potential, Joey was on PK2 with Raz in the last game. DBoss and Ray are good penalty killers, but they're needed more on PP and ES than PK.

I doubt Todd will be able to fix Joey's offensive game but it's definitely worth a shot. It's pretty evident that Joey has low hockey IQ. I think he'll do OK on the PK, Fester should have used him more.

Imagine this team in McLellan's 3rd season...2026-27

Let's say
1) We sign a top-4 LHD this summer (Pettersson, for ex.)
2) We sign a top-6 W next summer (hometown Kyle Connor, for ex.)

Not completely unrealistic.

Connor---Larkin---Raymond
DeBrincat---Danielson (2nd yr)---2025 1st (R yr)
Mazur (2nd yr)---Kasper---MBN (R yr)
Buchelnikov (R yr)---Compher---Berggren

Edvinsson---Seider
Pettersson---ASP (2nd yr)
Wallinder (R yr)---Johansson

Cossa (2nd yr)
??? or Augustine (R yr)

Waaaay too soft for the playoffs. Third line and first pair will be the only ones throwing any checks.

We are a mess……
Copp
Compher
Fischer
Petry
Chariot
Kane
They all are taking up space, and we are getting worse.

Well you’re not going to see Copp, Compher or Chiarot moved for starters. Likely ditto for Petry too with his NMC. So probably in March you’ll see Fischer and Kane moved.

I don't think there's much in GR realistically ready. I'd give Elmer a shot, and I think Danielson could probably come up and hold his own, but I'd rather him keep getting more aggressive on O with the Griffins.

I don't think Wallinder or Buium are ready.

I hope they let Danielson play couple of games for Detroit this season .
Ether trade Elmer or bring him up. Watson seems like more confident then half of the Red Wings, so bring him also up .

Yzerman needs to trade Talbot. Cossa should be staring every non back-to-back game in GR. He's not getting the start anymore with Husso in front of him.

Trade Talbot and run Husso/Lyon. Wins matter less than player development.

Griffins are on the struggle bus right now.

Yeah, I want a top 4 pick as well, lol.
Trading Lyon (ie Husso starting half our games) would be a good way to tank without broadcasting. Talbot I'd like to keep just for the sake of I want to win some games next yr, it'll be hard to find someone as good as him in the off-season on a one yr deal, he seems like he'd be a nice mentor for Cossa, etc.

Trading Kane would be a nice next move. He'll return a little value...plus he's a bad veteran leader...and his complete lack of hustle, interest in D, attitude, etc. is starting to bother me. You might be able to find a contender willing to take on Tarasenko based on his playoff performance last yr.

Copp/Compher probably require at least a 2nd to move. And even that might not be possible. Holl/Gustafsson could maybe be dumped along w a 3rd to a bad team.

Keep Danielson in GR

Bring up Watson and Soderblom

End of the Griffins season Cossa, Danielson, Mazur (if healthy), Wallinder and maybe Lombardi are all coming to Detroit for some games. ASP and maybe MBN will play games in Detroit after the SEL playoffs too.

Stop signing mediocre to bad players to multi year contracts and wasting cap space. Holl,Chairot,Copp,Compher,etc are a complete waste of cap space. My god I could’ve done better in free agency from my recliner.
100%. We've got plenty of depth players and prospects as it is. If it's not an elite top-6 forward or top-4 D...why bother.

If Rantanen or Marner actually hit the market...I hope to hear we either signed them or offered more than whoever did.

No one around here could stomach what those two will/would get in the open market. Rantanen around 14 million per for at least 8 and Marner easily 13-11.5 for 8.

Fans around here don't believe in paying for the best players. They're too much into value, watching their draft boards and building up a team like that and the going to work Pistons. An anomaly...

I think there is a legitimate chance they find a super star late in the draft(might take 15 years) before a contract like that one is signed to bring one in. Rantanen would really be something if he was actually brought in.

the thing to remember with these guys is that they were all brought in during lalonde's reign of suck. i hope at least a couple of these guys pick it up under mclellan

edit: being up 4-1 on the caps in the 1st period is a good example of that. chiarot with a goal, gus with a point, kane with a goal and an assist. let mclellan cook before we decide all these guys are trash
