What NHL teams do need full rebuild right now?

Nashville Predators

We're over a third into the season. They are tied with the Blackhawks with an identical record for worst record in the League. Their goal differential is the worst in the League. Their spending spree flopped tremdously. Their most utilized players are all old. This isn't worth trying to see if they can claw their way out of it. Cold analytically or not, playoffs might already be out of the question this year mathematically, and it's not going to get better in the immediate term.

They have a few extra 1st round picks already. At this point they need to consider everyone that doesn't have a NMC to be fully available and should start asking Josi what teams he'd be interested in waiving for.

Oilers. Too many bad contracts. They should have moved Leon and Connor for as much as they could get. They are being let down by the D and G and UNTILL they fix that problem they are in trouble. They are old a slow
Edmonton went to G7 of the SCF. They have the best player in hockey and another top 5 forward that they just extended. They're in a playoff spot. They need to make some re-tool depth moves and figure out goaltending, but be serious for a minute, they don't need a full rebuild...

OP realizes how long some teams have been bad for? Last PO for:
Buf in 2011
Det in 2016
Ott in 2017
Chi in 2017 ( 2020 were 12th 6 points in back of Nash/Van who were tied for 8th at 78 points. Most likely would have missed if not for the play in)
Ana in 2018
SJ in 2019

You are not in for 4/5 years of pain. More like 7/8 years.

Hawks still made playoff in 2020 even if qualification was different. They beat Oilers in a play-in. That is partially what encouraged Bowman (who knows maybe R. Wirtz secretly dying had a role in it as well) to "go for it". Doesn't make sense to use any criteria other than the one actually used.

Anyways, it's a digression.

If the implication is "which teams need a rebuild that clearly aren't doing one or anything close to it right now?" it's Nashville and The Islanders.

They're both teams spent to the cap with cores comprised of players of players in their late 20's or 30's that aren't anywhere close to competing for a cup. Both teams will likely set money on fire for the next couple years trying to fix it and that will inevitably delay their potential return to contending.

A lot of teams prolong their suffering by not fully committing to a rebuild until they've toiled in mediocrity for years.

People said this for years about Sid/Geno. All it takes is one competent GM and they'll win cups. Sadly for Oilers fans, ownership can only pick bums for GM

The Flames. Were already sorta there but this team won’t get out of its own way and is looking to finish outside the playoffs without finishing bottom 10 this year, thereby giving our first to Montreal.

Plenty of time for the wheels to fall off though

If they traded Andersson to the Canucks it would improve their draft position and it would help screw over the Oilers.

I would give up an endless pile of not-quite-crap assets because that's all the Canucks have.

Imagine if the Penguins had done that in 2015? The Oilers have one of the best players of all time and a secondary superstar as good as just about anybody else in the game – blowing it up would be insane. As a Canucks fan, I wish them the worst. But they are damn close and shouldn't do anything rash.
