It's coming up to about 10 years since they completed the renovations of MSG. I still remember the not so old Garden, with the purple and teal seats (too young to remember the rainbow seats and no suite boxes on the 7th Ave side), and it definitely was a nice upgrade, but I feel like a lot of things were missed. I noticed they added LED lights to the columns in the suite boxes between the 100 and 200 sections (lower and upper bowl). Here is my list of things they would update.
  • Add more tables and/or wall/shelf tables around the arena so you can eat in the concourse.
  • Louder buzzer and ref/Toronto horn. From the 200's you can barely hear the buzzer/horn.
  • Redo the exterior of MSG. Not sure if it's possible, but add more windows and glass, with more LED screens. Especially the side that faces 8th Ave. The brown stone exterior is very dated and no longer fits in with Hudson Yard a few blocks away.
  • Additional LED ribbons along the bridge. This was hinted at during the drawings before the bridge was built.

  • Repaint the ceiling. It's starting to show it's age and is pretty dirty.
  • Better team store with a larger selection of memorabilia. Sadly the Islanders have a really nice team store at UBS.
  • Acknowledgement of season ticket holders for both NYR and NYK. Would be cool if they put your name with the team logo, even if it was on a sticker on your seat(s).
What else would you like to see updated/upgraded at MSG?

The ability to go to a playoff game without going into debt
If they make the finals I may have to take out a mortgage.

Start with the play by play and color guys
Sam is the best, what are you talking about? I get he's getting old and blunders the wrong name once or twice a game, but come on, the guy is the best in the business.

Definitely on board with redoing the ceiling. Place looks like a Soviet building at this point. Not a fan of the brown exterior either. I get it’s “classic” or whatever, but it’s also time to adapt to changing styles and a changing neighborhood, as the OP indicated.

He's been a great voice for the NYR's but just like Phil Rizzuto for the Yankees, he's making more mistakes with names, plays, penalty calls.

he may not be as old as Rizzuto when he retired, but he's not that far off as Rizzuto was a Yankees broadcaster for 40 years, Sam has been doing NYR games for 38

time to go

MSG isn't going to be making any other upgrades until it 100% knows that they'll be above Penn Station for the foreseeable future. They'd need assurance since there are people that want to have MSG moved and build up Penn Station to where it goes upward.

My best guess is that by 2030, MSG will be forced to move and a brand new location will be built. Have a feeling it will be across the street where the old post office is. They will want to keep the roof and will figure out a way to detach the roof and have it moved across the street. Seattle did something similar with Climate Pledge Arena where they suspended the roof over the arena while they tore it down and rebuilt it.

The old post office is now the Moynihan Train station. They’re not going to tear that up any time soon since it opened less that 2 years ago. If anything there were talks of moving MSG to where the post office sorting facility is between 28-30th street between 9th and 10th Ave. Not as convenient as being right on top of Penn Station with super quick access to NJT/LIRR/PATH/MTA subway. Not sure if that land is available now.

Sam and Joe need to stop treating the audience like 6 year Olds.

The speed of the game has caught up to Sam.i think if he said less and allowed himself to be sure it wouldn't be so bad. But he is struggling more than once or twice and even worse when gives the wrong credit to save/post/wide or when a puck does or doesn't go in.

Widen the concourse on the 200 level. Getting around there is difficult during the regular season. Now it's downright impossible.
For sure, I went during an Islanders Rangers game and it was packed, couldn't move. But that's most likely an architecture thing and won't happen unless they do a real major overhaul and restructuring.

All I ask for is game-specific warm-up pucks. Not just settling for the blank ones.

If the Panthers and Coyotes can do it, the Rangers have no excuse.

Yeah I have no expectations that it'll happen. But back when they did renderings/photos, it looked like they were going to knock out walls to make a wider space. Also, before the renovation, you could walk around in the bowl itself, which helped minimize traffic jams. Now that that's gone, getting around sucks.

Banners honoring people like Frank Boucher, Bill and Bun Cook, Lester Patrick and Emile Francis. Phish gets one for a 13 show stand but not heroes of the past who didn’t go decades without a Stanley Cup?

is it possible to have fold down trays on the back of seats to put food to go along with cup holders? Or is that a potential hazard in getting out quickly in an emergency?

I don’t think you could widen the concourse so it isn’t as crowded during intermissions.

I just don't know how much they could really do within the framework of the current building. The 8th floor concourse is a disgrace in terms of being able to move during an intermission but there's nothing you could really do to make it bigger since there's x amount of space. All they could do is get rid of vendors in tight areas and move them elsewhere. Designated Driver stand and Liquor stand right near 226/227 come to mind as the crowd really bottlenecks there. Move that behind the 7th ave net somewhere where there's more room.

I don't like the LED ribbon on the bridge as it is in the rendering. In your line of sight and way too distracting. I think the bridge could use another board to make it 4 across.

Bigger team stores would be awesome. I don't know how the 2PENN renovation impacts things but maybe they could take out space where Borders/the food hall/etc used to be for a new store. Presumably that's rent they pay out of pocket though which I'd assume is a no go.

It'd also be nice if they let fans down for warmups. Seemed hit or miss this season. I know the obvious reason is to keep people out of the expensive seats but it seems very petty to not let fans down considering the price to get in the building.

Forgot to mention but I'd love to see some sort of NYR/NYK hall of fame within the building. Again, don't know where it goes but it should be known when you walk into the building for any event that it's the home of the Rangers and the Knicks. When you walk in for a concert or wrestling show, you wouldn't know either team even played there.
