William Karlsson's next contract a wild gamble for Golden Knights
If the team and Karlsson go through arbitration, the term will be one year (until UFA eligibility).
What term (length) and $$? Max 8 years. If $80m cap, max salary (20%) would be $16m.
He only has this season with amazing offensive output. So, probably paying for probable potential.
Most of the rest are still on their entry level contract. The question Vegas — or any other team Karlsson might potentially play for next season — has to answer is: How much of a raise should he get?
It’s such a difficult question to answer because Karlsson’s story is so unique. There is almost no other comparable player in the league right now, which makes properly assessing his value almost impossible. No one should be able to say with great confidence what sort of player he will be next season or two seasons from now or five seasons from now.
Forty-goal scorers are extremely rare in today’s NHL and the players that hit that number don’t typically fluke their way to it. That means the players that hit that mark typically get paid large sums of money for many, many years. Karlsson is also at an age where he should still be in the prime of his career, if not at his peak level of offensive performance.
There are 21 players in the NHL this season that have scored 40 goals before their age 27 season.
Out of that group, 14 are making at least $5 million against the salary cap this season, 12 make at least $6 million and eight make more than $8 million.
