What makes Blues fans think they have a shot at getting Statsny??

At some point, they are going to have to fix their defensive issues. That's going to cost money. I just don't think they have the long term room to keep everyone, but that's my personal opinion.

Obviously, Stastny wants to win a cup which is why he would come to the Blu......*snerk*

Sorry, I just can't go through with that one.

The only way I see Stastny coming to the Blues:
Colorado basically tells him he's only getting third line at best minutes and to clear the way for McKinnon. Possibly on a shorter deal (3-4 years?) which makes Stastny uncomfortable enough to actually explore the market.
Blues swoop in at about $6.5 and he signs here.

I rate those chances as good as I have the Blues winning the Cup next year.

He's Colorado's third line center. He's playing with guys like Mcginn and Parenteau. You don't think Schwartz and Tarasenko are better than those two?

He started the year with Landeskog (who stayed there the whole season and they work brilliantly well together) and Tanguay on his wings and since Tanguay went done his most common RW is MacKinnon. He's Colorado's #1 center whose line plays the role of a shut-down line (all three broke 60 point mark to boot) while Duchene's gets favorable offensive minutes.

McGinn played a handful of games on his wing and Parenteau was never on that line.

Also, regardless of what happens, lets not be like Philly fans and go to the Avs board or the main board with Stastny stuff like they did with Petro and Shatty. We know how annoying it is.

Anyway, to answer the question that was the thread title:

A combination of foolish optimism, desperation and his father is involved-ish with the Blues.

Yup. That loss really helps the Blues chances. At least St. Louis lost to a legit team.

Source? And why should we believe him other than we really really want to?

When it comes to Strickland, you just have to listen to once to know he's a tool.

I'm beginning to warm to the idea of him being between Tarasenko and Schwartz, and the fact they lost tonight just reinforces the idea that The Avs need more toughness. If he sees what some of us see he might just jump, I'm still concerned about giving him that much more than the current top forwards on this team and what it could do to their in team salary structure, but I still lean towards him signing with Colorado.

Sign Schwartz to an 8 year deal in the $5m range and get an agreement in place with Tarasenko to sign the same deal on July 1. Salary structure isn't really a factor when we'll have the key pieces locked down long term.

That said, I think Steen broke the structure.

Strickland is reporting that the Avs aren't expected to re-sign Stastny.

I buy the rumor. There's no reason that a deal wouldn't have been signed, sealed, and delivered during the regular season if both parties wanted to get it done. We've discussed why signing Stastny long-term might not the be the best route for Colorado with their two elite (or soon to become elite) young centers and the holes on their blue-line. Stastny is going to get a lot of money as a free agent and probably seven years, especially after his impressive series. Odds tilt toward Stastny testing the market. This ownership group is clearly committed to spending money and I'd rather them spend money than trade assets, especially after this season. Fill the bottom six forwards with cost-effective players relative to this season and become more top heavy. Sobotka is an excellent 3rd line anchor no matter his wingers. It's a perfect fit. Always was. Hopefully it gets done.

If Colorado takes themselves out of the race, we better win. Army knows the need for it and likely any offer that is fair would get him.

Hopefully it's Colorado that doesn't want to re-sign him and not the other way around. May give him some motivation to sign with a division rival and show them how big of a mistake they made.

I don't think there is a chance in hell either schwartz or tarasenko sign deals like that. Their potential is sky high.

I think it is safe to say that they would both be very open to long term contracts. It is what agents push for with young talented players. You only have to look at RoR and Subban where the agents were really pushing for long term deals in the $5m range and you can be damn sure that both GM's regret not doing those deals now. Kadri was another reportedly looking for 6+ years last summer.

Both Tarasenko and Schwartz are very good and have loads of promise... but haven't exactly proven too much. Young players that have proven a more are getting long term contracts at $6m. Landeskog (younger, better numbers and just as good/better all-round game) signed long term at around $5.5m.

RFA years are relatively cheap, and that that tempers the UFA years we would be buying. You can say it is an easy choice to take the 2 year contract at $3.25m per (which is about what they would get on a bridge deal) because they can prove so much, but it is really not easy to walk away from the security that a $40m-$42m 8 year contract offers you.

The nature of the business means you can basically force them into bridge deals, which I think is what we should all expect to see with both players sadly.

My experience has been that Strickland's predictions (e.g. saying what will happen, before anyone on the inside has made ANY indication in that direction) are wrong more often than right. When he is right, in the end, usually we all already heard something that would have made us "predict" the same thing. He often "jumps the gun" based on misinterpreting some shaky "information".

I don't put ANY faith in his "report" that The Avs aren't expected to sign Stastny. I hope it's true, but don't think Strickland has any inside sources with The Avs. Right now there's no way to know what they and he will do. I'd guess it's 50-50. I really hope The Blues can get him. I think The Avs, especially after getting knocked out by The Wild, will think twice about signing him to a long, expensive contract, when they have enough good centres, and desperately need costly high-level help on defence.
