What makes a player choose center over wing?

BUT there is a reason behind this......i mean its not coincidence Gretz,Mario,Sid, Geno and Mcdavid are centers:

if you are the best forward on your team growing up whether its pewee B, Junior A or D1 college you should be a center to fully utilize all your tools.

so no not every 1C is better than every 1RW or 1LW in the NHL but every elite 1C is better than every elite 1RW/LW in my mind

Think QB vs wide receiver, where the center is kind of like the QB trying to feed his wingers and not cause turnovers.

Did you just use football to explain hockey to hockey fans on a hockey forum? :sarcasm:

Usually the best players at a young age are made to play C and just stick with it.

Apart from that, I think that it's something their coach should identify and decide for the player - Which suits them best.

Especially when some of us have never watched a single game of handegg. One would prefer a widely popular sport to be used as an example.

The play typically runs through the center. That's why every novice hockey player rushes to the faceoff dot at the start of every shift lol

There's obviously some serious exceptions to this but normally, yeah. Growing up the centers are normally the best players on the team

A center understands and sees the game better, for the most part. After playing centre for a long time, going back to wing tends to be boring.

Guys that could move as well either direction were generally moved to defense, guys that read the play and could handle the puck usually became centers, guys that were left were wingers.
