What made you a Boston Bruins fan?

This is for people who are NOT from New England, or live here. It seems to me that the Bruins have alot of fans from all over (especially in Canada, it seems) and I would like to hear your story.

What made you pick the Bruins over the Canadiens, Maple Leafs, or any other team?

Back in 1989, when I was 6 years old, watched my first hockey game ever (where I actually knew what hockey was). It was EDM vs BOS in the Stanley Cup Final. My older brother is and was a Detroit fan, and whenever his team was knocked out, he cheered for any Canadian team still in the hunt.


Me, I just cheered against him. It was fun, it pissed him off.


Boston lost, but I grew to liking the team. Haven't looked back since.
 
Born in 94, My dad worked in construction, one of his bosses had season tickets and gave them to us for about 4-5 years when I was a kid so I went to all of the games until the lockout. It took until the 08-09 playoffs against MTL to get me back.
 
Too many things. Cam Neely probably being the biggest personally but also grandpa's love of Bobby Orr, and my constant conversations as a youngun with him about how Lemieux, and Gretzky never really compared. Then you have Ray Bourque, Terry O'Reilly and all the other greats as well.

Then it's about the attitude surrounding the team. Hard work and pride being the key ingredients... and not righteous "we won 24 cups" pride either but a true pride in the history of the franchise and game.

I'd also have to give some credit to Montreal and Toronto as I absolutely loathe both and would continue to do so even if there were no team in Boston. Montreal is like the metrosexual at school, all about skill, flash and glam with a gigantic sense of self entitlement. Carrying that kids banner around rooting for their success doesn't appeal to me. Toronto is like the rich kid who passes his classes yet who you know is as dumb as a friggin post with that same sense of self entitlement. Again, not someone I'd want to root for.

Then the list continues... the more I wrote the more reasons I'd think of.

Orr, Espo, McKenzie, Cashman, Donnie Marcotte, Retelle, O'Reilly, Jonathan, Wensink, Middleton, Bourque, and of course Don Cherry
 
Grew up in Peterborough, ON Canada (some may know the history ties to the Montreal Canadiens), my Dad was a huge Habs fan. So of course I to cheer for another team...so it was the Big Bad Bruins - rival of Montreal...as far as I can remember, cheered for the Bruins since 1973 to present (born in 1968).....
 
When I was a mere lad, CBS had the NHL game of the week every Sunday.

I had no idea what hockey was about, but did notice that Bobby Orr looked totally different than any other player on the ice. My hockey knowledge was non existent, but stylistically Orr did things in ways that no one else even attempted.

It was always intriguing to see Orr make a great play, have the announcers and crowd go bonkers, and yet Orr himself would skate back for the faceoff with his eyes staring downward at the ice, almost as if he was embarrassed by what he had just accomplished.

I don't qualify, but I met my first non-New England Bruins fan in college. He is from Newfoundland, and had that general disdain for the twin motherships of hockey in Canada. But he loved how the Bruins played under Don Cherry, it was fun just having some hockey camaradarie in the boonies of SW Missouri, but Guy Penney was the best piece of it. Now he's a missionary in Africa. Imagine my joy when he sent a photo wearing the M&N Esposito jersey I sent him.
 
Growing up all my friends were Bruins fans. I don't know why that is. Also, the first hockey card I ever got was a Phil Esposito Hall of Fame card. I started following the team, and just became a fan.

Combine these 2 replies and that's my story. I grew up in a small town about 45 minutes east of Montreal and everybody in my family and hometown cheered for the Habs. But watching # 4 play for the first time I knew I was going in a different direction. Even though I didn't totally understand the rules or strategy of the game I knew that Bobby Orr was a special talent and so much better then anybody else out there on the ice. Plus the fact that everybody around me absolutely hated him and his team made my decision to cheer for the Bruins seem right to me. :handclap:

Thank you! I wasn't sure if some of the guys on the board would think it's stupid or not. I'm a fan, and I like to connect with other fans! And your crack about the "twin motherships of hockey in Canada" is legen-(wait for it...)-dary! I am SO using that. With your permission, of course...
 
Grew up half way between Montreal and Toronto, and everyone cheered for one or the other, pretty much based on family history. They all hated Boston, so being the contrary sob that I am that seemed like a good fit. That it was the Orr/Espo days certainly didn't hurt either. A few years later, I probably would have been an Islanders fan (Billy Smith was/is older, but grew up 3 houses away and we played a lot of street hockey with him in the summer) or a Sens fan once they came back in. But 10 years living in Toronto didn't sway me, and now I find myself not quite in the majority but with a lot more friendly Bruins fans around me in Saint John.
 
I'm from Philadelphia and has always been a Bruins fan. Bobby Orr is the reason I started liking the Bruins. And by the way I always hated the Flyers.
 
Bobby Orr!

I was 7 years old and I first saw him play against the Leafs on HNIC. I was amazed at how this one players was so much better than anyone else, and I mean not even close. And of course everyone else I knew was either a Hab or Leaf fan, so of course I had to cheer for the B's

living in Montreal and dealing with their annoying fans. I wanted to root for whatever team they hated the most....that was 25+ years ago....I have not looked back since.
GO BRUINS!!!! and....DEATH TO THE HABS!!!!
