What looked drastically different last night from Gallant's offensively stunted system?

Systems looked fine. Effort level looked fine. Stamina through the game was fine.

Player usage was still shit and later when we are facing much better teams it will be a major issue.

Is the ultimate goal to look good against Buffalo in game 1 of 82. Or is the goal to win a Cup and multiple Cups. If not then what the f*** are we doing here. We aren't winning jack shit with Trocheck leading the team's forwards in ice time by a WIDE margin. Panarin played about 3 minutes LESS than Trocheck. That's flat-out stupid. No other words for it.
LOL I get the feeling if you won a brand new Corvette you would complain about gas mileage. :D

Honestly I'd think the point overall is to manage the roster over 82 games and hopefully 16 wins past that

frekaing the f*** up out after game one about icetime usage when the team went up 3-0 early enough is pretty silly shit

I make 99% of my post high AF but I have always thought Mr Gpucks post were rather positive and realistic . But this minutes thing in game one has made him snap for whatever reason ....

Actually I think that PO loss against the Devils made him snap, now any imperfection any remnant of that teams play in this year's team is going to set him off .....

First of all, it's one game. We had games where we looked good with Gallant so I'm gonna wait and see.

I definitely enjoyed it and saw encouraging signs. We slowed the Sabres down and made them play rugby with us. They couldn't escape the zone and we countered. We finally played like the big but not fast team we are.

You can be effective without great speed if you slow the game down and use structure to think fast when you can't move fast.

NYR were forcing turnovers in the neutral zone through a combination of the 1-3-1 and defensemen playing more aggressive......

Transition...... we are a lot better at finding the back of the net from a turnover in the neutral zone than from starting out behind our own net....
This is the biggest difference from last year. We basically have the same team in personnel, but we are playing a totally different system.

And this 1-3-1 suits us to a tee. Instead of chasing to put pressure on the D, deep in the zone, they just sit back in the neutral zone and wait for the opposition to come to them. I just love it!

No wasted energy on the forecheck until necessary. I also think it takes time off the clock, while the opposing D holds on to the puck, while they figure on how to get through the neutral zone.

Also this 1-3-1 makes it much easier to play as a 5 man unit. It just inherently keeps teammates in closer attendance. And you can see the benefit of that in the transitions coming off turnovers.

This also cuts down on the odd man rushes.

It remains to be seen how this plays out when we are trailing in a game, but you can tell right away, will we be mighty tough to beat protecting a lead.

So far, I am mighty impressed with what Laviolette has done here.

Wasn't too happy with what I saw in preseason.

Love that Will Cuylle made the team. Was Vesey a healthy scratch?

Looking forward yet again to another promising NY Rangers season.

Isn't that what the Lightning did to win two cups in a row? We were faster than them in 2022. They slowed the game down completely. The Avs were just a better team or they would have threepeated.

We were already pretty slow that year but sort of, yeah. The Lightning Cup teams were low-key really boring.

Their ECF's against the even more boring Islanders were a war crime.

i don't think gallant had an offensively stunted system, i don't think he had much of a system. it was more about situational play and wanting to see numbers in areas on either side of the puck. his philosophy seemed more about this is what's required, you have the freedom to work it out from there. it ultimately resulted in players rarely being on the same page in moving the puck around the ice.

re panarin, i'm not sure his decisiveness is as much lavi as it is his taking ownership of what went wrong. i mean gallant hated the turnovers and wanted him to shoot more, i just don't think panarin wanted to hear it. after 2 coaches and the playoff failures he seems to have really looked in the mirror. now he may benefit from the structure of lavi longer term, but i think what we saw game 1 had more to do with him recognizing the issues everyone saw were actually issues and wanting to improve.

the team as a whole though looked worlds different. lavi definitely has a structure and the puck movement out of the zone and on regroups / lack of chaotic breakdowns were evident of that. i think gallants old school more stand offish style of coaching had players wanting more direction, and it seems like lavi is the polar opposite there in the way he communicates with the team as a group and as individuals. it's only one game, so things could go any direction, but certainly to this point and in that one game there's been almost nothing not to like about the job he's done.

So much more communication, engagement and teaching. Players seemingly totally buying in on the system.

This goes a bit beyond just one game where it's impossible to measure "what's different".

This entire camp really has been different. Much more up tempo and competitive. Lots of blowing the play dead to teach.

I saw Peca in Panarins ear, in Kakko ear, in Cuylle ear. All game.

Everything about this team off ice dynamic just feels different than the last two years. No garantees but good chance we will see it translate to the ice.

Let’s keep in mind, we expected a sluggish start because it takes weeks/months into the first season to truly see the full impact of playing in a system like this.
Even lavi said it post game, they got away from it at times, and they need to be better.

That says there’s room to improve, and they’re gonna work on it.

Bumps in the road during the acclimation process are certainly common/expected. Sometimes with the right mix of vets and a really good system that is picked up quickly the curve can be mitigated a bit. But the fact we see so many good signs early is a positive indicator.

Thats a good point. There will be times they reflexively go away from it. They will have to be pulled back. Lets get back to playing our system.

I think there's something to this. I remember in 2014 in the middle of games where we bled goals against there was a 3-1 game against the Kings where we were damn near perfect defensively. I hope this isn't just that Kings game and we shouldn't be expecting the other games to happen soon.

This is the major thing that stuck out to me. There was a much more deliberate and urgent mindset on the transition. Puck support was also much better.
My immediate thoughts also.

The puck support was fantastic all night... that made the breakouts MUCH cleaner (as in there were breakouts as opposed to what we saw under Gallant)

I think I remember like 3 or 4 chip outs... the rest were deliberate & crisp.

Now 5 games in , I am feeling / hoping a bit more that Lavys system could be exactly what this team needed to play UP to its offensive talent level on the ice. In gallants system five on five we were absolutely horrible relative to our collective offensive skill level.

Right now, we're seeing signs on multiple fronts. We see Laffy and we see Kakko. These guys are starting to maybe look like players more deserving of their draft slots. Yes, It's still early season for these 2.... So there's still a lot more to be determined.

However if even one of them can play Up to their draft slot, if 1 or both of them can at least Look Like a 1/2 decent top 6 forward that's productive in multiple areas that's scoring at a 1/2 decent rate that will be a Huge huge boon to the depth of this team.

Can Panarin actually be feel comfortable to go out and play his best game again? Which is to pass AND be put in positions where he feels like he can snipe again....so far so good on that front.

So much of it is also NZ play. Actually being able to cut the ice in half and transition vs having to go 200 feet every time they want to create offense. As we saw in the NSH game, this team severely lacks the speed necessary to create offense going the full 200 ft.

This current makeup of the roster will therefore live or die by short passes and puck support coming out of their end.

In addition to a structured system, the one thing that has stood out to me, especially last night considering the bad loss to the Preds is patience.

Gallant would have made changes to the lines going into this game. He was a hands off coach but he always felt a need to tinker with the lineup. After an ok first period he likely would’ve switched things back again.

Lav has not only shown patience but has openly discussed it with the media and players. This allows the combinations time to gel, the team form an identity. And it’s especially important for the 4 young forwards.

You show confidence in your preparation and your players when you keep things set, even after things don’t go well

Last night the second line went off but we very well could have had a completely different second line after the egg they laid on Thursday.

It also allows kids like cuylle to make mistakes. Cuylle leads to seattles first goal, sits the next shift and is immediately out again.
One shift, learn that the coach is aware of what happened, and do better.
The coaching is night and day. There’s both responsibility and reward.
Play hard, you get rewarded.

Nyr played well last night but it's becoming clear Seattle doesn't have the mojo early in the season that they had last year. We got them on the right day. We needed that win. Grubauer is awful

No different with Panarin either.

He was fantastic last night and getting double shifted.

If he start the giveaway shit I’d expect his minutes to go down.
