I had a spreadsheet going for a few years pitting our staff against Future Considerations and while a lot of the players picked were different it was a bit of a wash in terms of talent. Biggest difference was the McI pick and it all gets very, very hit and miss from around pick 90 on-wards. You also get a lot of goalies so have to make exceptions.
We would have had Victor Arvidsson though...

In the days before all teams had excellent scouting departments there was a big advantage to be had using your scouts. Now though does our scout really know that much more than the other 30 teams' scout?

Scouts should be deployed to try and find players in second tier leagues, lower level, and non traditional hockey countries. Scouting the OHL and such like everyone else does is going to yield little to no additional valuable information on a player you couldn't have got elsewhere

It depends.

You're trying to find just enough to give you a slight competitive advantage.

If it was just a matter of everyone seeing the same things, and going off lists compiled by scouting services, then every re-draft would exactly mirror the way the draft originally went.

They don't.

Why?

Well, one of the reasons is that sometimes you identify a guy who who gives you better than value than other teams think. It's not always a matter of good vs. bad picks. A lot of times it's a matter of good vs. better.

In 2017, Vancouver could've taken Mittelstadt 5th overall. It wouldn't have been a bad pick, and it would've aligned with a lot of other teams rankings.

Instead, they took Pettersson, who was a better pick. Today, Pettersson would likely go first in a 2017 re-do, maybe second.

So what happened? Everyone had access to the same information. The scouts should've theoretically known the same information. But they didn't, Vancouver uncovered just a little bit more, and processed the information just a little bit differently. As a result, they were one of the teams that would've taken Pettersson with the fifth pick (the Rangers were another team that would've).

I think your gauges are off. 50 points is not a top line player. McDavid had 48 points in 45 games his rookie season. Plenty of non-McDavid level 18 year olds have had 50 points. Hischier is one. Nugent Hopkins, Landeskog, the list goes on.

This again? Look up by positon, LW, C & RW. You will find that 5o point players are top line players. We can debate where on the spectrum they are, but the numbers are undeniable. This is the Kreider debate. And if you do not believe that Krieder is a top liner in this league, I have no idea of what to tell you. Look at the numbers. They do not lie

Of the 100 or so 18 year olds that have played in the NHL, 23 of them scored over 50 points. Forgetting different eras, some of which offense was easier to come by, these names include Gretzky, Hawerchuk, Crosby, Yzerman, Housley, Jagr, Kovulchuk, Muller. Those are some pretty lofty names. That is in the entire history of the NHL. Throwing it off as "plenty" is not realistic.

Now look at how many NHL players even score 50 points in today's NHL, out of the entire population.

MacKinnon is emerging is one of the best players in the entire league and what he did was much more rare than simply 50. He had a historic season for an 18 year old. For reference, it was better than Jagr's.

Still think that 50 points by an 18 year old rookie is a reasonable expectation?

Kakko is on pace for less than 30 points , thats pretty bad. Good thing is so are Hughes and Dach (or around 30ish, anyway) so idk whats going on this season.

Quinn is the right man for the team now. Whether he is the right coach for when they are ready to compete is a chapter that hasnt been written yet.

His divisiveness and self-serving actions that went on behind the scenes during the playoffs doesn't get enough acknowledgement and history, in some ways has been too kind to him.

My feelings on Quinn are well-documented.

Every draft pick should play at a minimum of 1 year at the AHL.

That gets a bit tricky with the rules as they are where junior players need to either play in the NHL or go back to their jr team and the AHL isn't an option.

Salary Cap Era Sather was overrated imo, he still made many bad FA signings, but better player development and Lundqvist made that tenure look better than what it was

Ottawa loss in the ECSF in 2017 was a blessing in disguise. Had the Rangers somehow pushed the Pens to 7 games like the Sens, I could see Rangers trying one more big push to win a Cup instead greasing the tires on re-building by trading Stepan

Yeah, we barely got past a completely mediocre Montreal team only because of Hank's goaltending, and that Ottawa team we lost to was a fluke in its own right. Pitt would have swept us though so no need to worry about that.
