Comparison of ones from the 80s to 2020:

This year's:

Gotta be honest, I forgot a ton of these. Only been watching since the early 90s so never even seen the ones from the 80s before.

The one from 97 is one I haven't seen since that particular year and is just as good as I remember. It didn't last long. Obviously, the other ones from the 90s with the hype-as-hell sax is incredible. In context, the modern one we had in 2020 was pretty sweet. This year's, not so much honestly.

What's your personal favorite?

The one from the mid-90s to early 2000s by far the best for me. Always loved it. Just put a Rangers playlist together last week and have it and the Game Night Intro from that time period on the playlist.

One thing I think is cool about the 2005 opening is that it coincided directly with Henrik Lundqvist's rookie season and was introduced after Messier's retirement.

It really sort of represented a change to the modern era - which, despite no cup, has been a great one. Not sure if that's intentional or not. But it's kind of cool.

RBA loving that COKE IS IT ad.

I'm a zoomer born in 00' so I don't know anything other than modern MSG intros so for me the most nostalgic has to be the ones used from 2005-2015. Thing is I wished they never removed the sax and skate sharpening intro used in the mid to late 90's, it's such a great pump up theme while retaining that classy New York style.

I remember at the start of the 2019-2020 season they remade that same classic intro with our players from now and it was perfect. I can't seem to find it anywhere though. I remember seeing it on twitter at one point and it was even on YouTube but it might've gotten removed.

I think they used it at the start of pre-season that year in 2019. I still wish they kept that tune and style but I guess they wanted to be more modern.

So 2001-2004 is weird, I started watching during the 2000-2001 season and I feel like that was the exact intro minus the shot of Lindros because he wasn't there yet. I still remember the Nedved shot going off the camera. Why did they go so generic since 2005? Is it so that they didn't have to update them as often with newer players?

I remember the 93-98 version the most...especially the music, but my favorite is the 86-90 version because that's when my full blown obsession with the team began. I started watching games sporadically in 80,81 but when I started Junior High in 83 it started becoming more ingrained, and by 85-86, I was an addict.

The sax intro is fantastic, my favorite. But most nostalgic for me is the 2006/2007 one they used in the Jagr years:

I love (almost) all of them. I love the sax intro - such a classic. But I also started watching in 97, so that kitschy intro from the late 90s is quite near and dear to me. All of the ones since the lockout have been decent, but I think our current one is the best of the lot.

That being said - not exactly related, but on the topic of Rangers intros - NOTHING will ever get me more pumped up for a game than this music. Bring it back for Rangers Game Night, PLEASE.

The sax intro is perfection. The music is amazing, there's no advertising like in the 80s ones and it was a little too early to get caught up in the over the top graphic editing that the late 90s one has.

Are we sure that is all of them? Felt like 1 or 2 from the 80's were the best and were missing.

NYI fan here, who grew up in the NYC Metro-area basically between our Dynasty, and your historic ‘94 Cup. Have to say 90-93 sticks out to me most. Amazing watching it back now how I basically remembered the sequence of highlights perfectly. Sort of a precursor for the sax-heavy one you guys love (for obvious reasons). Love NYC sports history- so thanks for walk down memory lane. Pretty cool.

Definitely not sure. There could be some missing there.

Did msg always carry the islanders? I was surprised to see Yankees footage in that intro as well.

Negative. The Islanders were most famously a SportsChannel (Cablevision) property. Through various corporate maneuverings (involving a famous Cablevision v MSG dispute over the Yankees among other things) they ended up under the same corporate umbrella (Cablevision) as MSG. Don’t think they had actual “branded” MSG broadcasts until much more recently (2008?) though.

That said, I do remember watching lots of Rangers-Islanders games on MSG growing up. Most of my friends were Rangers fans. Lol.
