That's the lack of adjustments. They never got grittier.

We literally finally had more grit with Neil being added to Andre Roy and we just trade Roy away for yuha ylonen...why? Why trade grit away for some invisible player when you already are filled with responsible players but lack grit? Roy went on to win the cup in Tampa. Lol

Or why trade for barrasso when goaltending wasnt our issue at the time? Tugnutt/Rhodes were a reason for our success, not the reason for the lack of success. We literally got rid of our defensive depth (laukannen) to downgrade our goaltending because he was older and won a decade before on a stacked Pittsburgh team...greattt. tugnutt was the better goalie at the time already.
I really want to answer this post but it will open a can of worms and 2 bags of cats.

Well, the league has changed since Phillips played, D are expected to be a big part of the offense, can't hook and grab, and players in general are much faster. Might have something to do with it, but it's not unique to us, most teams don't play guys on their offside unless it's necessary

And yet we seemed to get more offense out of our defense in years 2000-2010 then 2010-2024 (minus Karlsson)

Funny how we get less offensive depth from the back end the more the league switches to being important to get offense from the back end.

Maybe we should start investing in some defenseman with skill? Someone who could put up 40+ points on the second pair or something?

Having Chabot who is meh and injured, Sanderson, and then nothing offensively is not a recipe for success... especially if we don't have the top defensive pair in the league to make up for lack of offense .(Volchenkov and Phillips)

Please answer lol
Didn't Muckler get fired for not getting Roberts? When did things start to get crazy around here? We all know what it became and could see it happening. Was it there all the time and we didn't see it?

Norris and Batherson have done nothing last 3 games. Zero points.
8 million + 6 million.

They gotta take things more seriously.

How do they look like world beaters one game, and then look completely invisible for multiple games?

I know competitive hockey isn't pro hockey...and I've only played as high as competitive hockey, but maybe someone who has played minor pro could answer this.

How come the good players on my teams growing up were almost always the best players. Sure, some were better than others, but they were almost always the best players...the question was always "are they going to have a great game or just a really good game?" They loved hockey and were good at hockey and always put effort to create things on the ice every shift game in and game out.

Now I understand the little differences get bigger the higher levels you go...

But how is there this different of an effort level or success level game in and game out.

Generally speaking, even into junior, doesn't matter which game you attend, you'll be able to know who the best player on the ice is after watching 2 shifts of everyone.

But with these sens, you could watch multiple games and come away thinking Gaudette is better than Norris or batherson... How are they so invisible for so long while also having the ability to dominate at other times?

These guys arent 21 and figuring it out. They're like 25 and 26...if anything, it's going to be about how many years before their offense starts to decline?

Team scoring was higher 1999-2010, 3.14/g compared to 2.92/g for the sens from 2018-present, (having the trio of Alfie/Spezza/Heatley for half the sample will do that) but pts per game by D was very close at .32 for the sens of old vs .30 for the current crop. The ratio is actually very close in both samples the D recorded a pt on ~63% of all team goals.

Shit that happened years ago is not relevant when we have a new coach. We're seeing improvement under the new coach.

We are until we're not, just like we saw against the Habs and the Sabres. That's why I made this post.

Not waiting until we're below .500 at Christmas.

I'm enjoying this season more than previous ones because the roster is more balanced, but the biggest negatives for me are that players that play well aren't rewarded and players that aren't the best aren't held accountable.

There is no reason for Hamonic to still be on the first pairing with Sanderson when the coach can try JBD. Green is showing favouritism and is killing our opportunities with Sanderson by having Hamonic up there. How tf does your #7 go to #3 before your #4 or 5 defender?

I can't judge Tkachuk on the Buffalo game because its the first time he's had undisciplined play this year, but I swear if we see Tkachuk make himself into a non-factor again it'll contribute towards another loss.

Green isn't giving me the most confidence right now. We have so many key players on the roster with injury concerns that are active (Pinto & Zub), but also looming (Norris & Chabot), and our star goaltender hasn't been playing like a star.

I think this core can make the playoffs a couple of times, but so far they don't have the discipline or composure to go deep.

below 0.500.. Are you kidding? even at 0.500 won't cut it. 93-96 points to get in. ~ 0.57 playing percentage. And the Sens are last year's bottom feeders. Their 2nd and 3rd trimesters will only get harder.

By Christmas they need to be at 0.600

Come Christmas and game 35. They had better be 19-12-4, or better.

so far 6-6-0.. they have to go 13-6-4, or a 0.65 win percentage. in the next 6-7 weeks.

I’ll tell you what, Zub coming back is huge.

Hamonic back on the 3rd pair and JBD sitting is absolutely moronic.

Absolutely, utterly, moronic.
Yes, not sure why Green is reluctant to put JBD together with Kleven. It seems like it would be worthwhile to do this for a while and then monitor the results IF for whatever reasons he is reluctant to give it a try.

Looks like Zub will be back this game and Hamonic will move down to 3rd pair. So, maybe the more topical question is why not JBD with Kleven.

I wonder if it's less close if you adjust for league scoring when it comes to points per game by d.

I don't think he's reluctant to put JBD with Kleven, he's reluctant to take Hamonic out of the lineup

100% agree there. The Kleven-JBD has been fine for a 3rd pairing. They quietly do everything that's been asked of them.

No reason to take out JBD and keep Hamonic.

It’s baffling.

I know and understand why, but it’s baffling.

Green isn’t an idiot, he knows more about hockey than everyone posting here. He’s got 20+ years of a playing career and 15+ years of coaching.

He can see it. He has guys in management who can see it. He has analytic guys who can read it.

It’s very upsetting that we can’t seem to make the obvious choices.

Alright. That's a tomato versus tomAto thing for me because if Hamonic (RD) is out then JBD (RD) is in. Good grief.

Alf,

we are at 0.500.. Pretty much in line with were we have been the last 4 years at this time.

At some point, things do have to change.

That is not "in line" with where we've been the last few years.

On November 7th in each of the last two years we had 4 wins. In both cases our schedule had been very home heavy.

We're playing a lot better than both of the last two years.

They just haven't convinced me they can win when it matters yet. A lot of hot streaks they have are pretty much post-December when they're out of it. Can they go on a decent point streak when they're at least .500 at the beginning of it and there's still time?

Like they just seem allergic to it almost. They just played a great stretch of 3 games and had the opportunity to pull away from that .500 record in Buffalo and just boom. Horrible PP, horrible PK, goalie couldn't make a save, captain taking dumb penalties, opponent's mediocre goalie looks really good.

If anything I'd say this Sens team has been the most consistent out of any in the last decade.

Leading up to the Sabres game I think there was legitimately only a couple games out of the 11 they had played where they didn't show up (against the Habs and Avs).

They could have easily won the games against the Devils, Knights and Rangers, and the latter two they should have won if goaltending and some bad bounces didn't get in the way.

We're only at .500 but I've been very pleased with team performance thus far. We play like this all season and we'll make the playoffs if Ullmark turns things around.

Alf! common

2023/2024 on Nov 7.. 10 games played 8 points... by game 12, they had 10 points
2024/2025 on Nov 7..12 games played 12 points

2022/2023 on Nov 7..11 games played 8 points. by game 12 , they were still at 8.

I mean.. pretty much the same neighborhood. From 8 to 10 to 12. Not exactly a quantum leap.

3 years, still at 0.500 or less at game 12.. All the playoff teams were pretty much at 15 points or better by game 12.

As seemingly small as 3 points off is, it can be a chasm.
