What is the rational reason Travis Hamonic plays?

The other options also suck and have none of his intangibles.
I think it is a thing that they want him in the dressing room. If he sits then that ain't happening.
Same goes for practice in terms of being a guy that plays vs a guy that doesn't.

Sports aren't necessarily rational (although the influence of gambling will now try and straighten the delightful irrationality out). Hamonic plays because he's on the team. He's old, slowing and all that - for sure - but maybe he's got one goal left in him - and he'll score it with all his heart - maybe the one that puts the Sens in the playoffs - or maybe he's soon to be (finally) replaced - but he'll be replaced in a way that signals to the other players they'll be respected right up to the end, if they're giving it their all. How about that?

Legit feels like this team jumps 5 spots in the power rankings when Hamonic isn't playing.

Not a fan of Hammers game over the years but there is 100% something to be said for 'Veteran Presence'. Gilbert mentioned it outright in his first media scrum.
I work a shitty warehouse job and even there it's a noticeable difference when there's old guy on the shift. Keeps you honest in your work IMO.

Green has basically said it’s his presence on the bench. There might be hockey reasons our untrained eyes don’t see but he referenced a specific play where Hamonic was basically coaching Kleven on the bench.
For a team that has had trouble staying level-headed in games, I somewhat understand the logic. It’s stuff we will never see so it’s hard to fully visualize it from our pov.
Don’t get me wrong, I still don’t think Hamonic should play. But ultimately our information is incomplete.

Same reason Gaudette hasn't left the lineup despite only having 5 points in his last 31 games (bringing nothing to the table besides scoring) and Highmore keeps getting ice time despite accomplishing jack squat every time he's on the ice.
Green coached Hamonic in Vancouver and clearly is very fond of his former Canucks. Clear favoritism.

I don't think I've seen him speak on the bench. He's always grasping for air after his shift is done.

Or getting hemmed in your zone and chasing the puck for the entire duration of your shift

I genuinely believe if he played tonight we would have lost. Chabot played an extremelyyyyy poor game. Having 2 defenders play that poorly would have resulted in a loss no doubt about it.
Hamonic is frequently among the worst performers in every game. He was great first 20 games and Green has never forgotten that since, lol.

Or maybe the fact Travis didn't play and we gave up 49 shots proves the exact opposite of what you guys think.
Poor hockey analysts think that whoever has the toughest assignments is to blame.
Poor analysts cherry pick the worst players to blame for everything. But somebody has to be your worst defenseman. And they are just trying to do there job like everyone else.
If we actually had better players we'd play them.
You guys used to pick on Ceci. He went to the cup finals last year. Still coveted.
Of course travis is not that good.
But he's part of this squad. He's vocal. He's a warrior. And he actually seems like a cool dude. I wonder how many of the nerds that post here he could fight at the same team. Easily 3 of you. Probably 4 or 5 though.

I’m all for Travis being a warrior from the pressbox.
Kleven played one of his best games since coming back from his injury tonight for some reason...
Every coach has their favourites, Green has Hammer, Smith loved Zaitsev, does anyone remember any players that just weren't that good that Murray, MacLean, etc., favoured?

At least with Zaitsev he had the salary that was too big to ignore and we didn’t have other options than him. Nothing much going for Hamonic.
