First of all, I'm a huge Quick fan and I'm 100% sure his struggles are due to his off season surgery. We must not forget that it takes time to get back into shape after a major medical procedure, even though we all wish Jonathan would be playing as well as last season. However, the truth is that at the moment Bernier gives us a better chance to win IMO.

So, let's play fantasy hockey and assume that Quick struggles earlier in the playoff, and Sutter turns to Bernier as a starter. I don't want to be a jinxer, but if Bernier would lead the Kings to the Cup, what do you think Lombardi would do this Summer?

With the cap going down, it will be possible to sign Bernier to a much friendly contract compared to Quick's one. I'm just wondering about this unrealistic scenario...but just wanted to know your thoughts about it, just for fun.

In little words, if this would ever happen, could Quick be the guy on the trading block?

Look how good Vancouver is doing trading a guy with the same contract as Quick. You can't just trade a guy when they have a bad year. Everyone is going to have them, including Kopitar. Doughty has had one or two as well.

I really hope some of these Bernier-at-all-costs supporters follow him to whatever team he gets traded to, because it's getting tiring reading post after post openly rooting against Quick just to get 'their guy' in.

Quick will not be the guy on the block.
 
I'm a Quick fan, and a Kings fan first.
I was just wondering about this unrealistic possibility, read better my post. I'll always upport Quick, as he was the main reason we won our first Cup.
 
Quick is an established #1 goalie over 4 years. Just because he is slumping, doesn't mean you end up with a goalie who has never been a starter as your #1 next year

Bernier will be the one traded
 
Since we are just having fun and kicking tires here......

JQ's contract is for less money than Luongo's and JQ has a cup and an MVP title so I think his value would be extremely high to a team like Philly or Edmonton, the usual suspects.

That said I can't see any reason to deal him in favor of JB. To begin with it would be contrary to everything that DL has done so far. DL has remained loyal to his players to a fault and I am certain that he will do everything he possibly can even if it costs us a run to get JQ's game where it should be.

Not saying that applies to this season but more of an overall philosophy.

We will honor JB's request and deal him after the season. I hope that JQ gets his game where it needs to be and if it doesn't then I hope that JB takes us back to the cup and wins the MVP too.

Then when we deal him his value will be ridiculous and his time spent as a King will always be remembered as among the very best and that is what I hope for every player who is lucky enough to wear the crown, nothing more and nothing less.
 
Quick isn't just a one hit wonder. He has been good for how many seasons now? I want to see how the D adjust with Regehr and Greene in the line up. I think Quick's game will pick up.

Glad we do have Bernier now tho. IF he is hotter going into the playoffs, he will get the start.
 
Honestly, I just want to play whoever gives the team the best chance to succeed. With Quick and Bernier, it really isn't about asset management. Maybe for other players, it would be, but if Quick struggles and Bernier leads us to a Stanley Cup, then that deserves to be looked at. I like Quick a lot, obviously. He was godlike last season and is the only reason we made the playoffs. But if Bernier is just as good, and the right offer came along for Quick instead of Bernier, I would consider that as well.
 
All Bernier will be doing is upping his trade value and giving himself a better chance at getting a starting position on another team. There is no scenario in which quick is traded and Bernier is retained. DL is going to sell high on Bernier. Quick earned his contract the past the seasons culminating in a Stanley cup win last year. His struggles are a combo of rust from the surgery and a decline in team defense. Trading Quick would send a horrible message to the rest if the team and I highly doubt that happens.
 
Bernier deserves to play more. Just because Quick was good last year, doesn't mean that we owe him something. I love Quick but he is just not good enough so far this year.

Everyone says that JB is untested and we don't know what he can do, but one thing for sure right now is that he looks darn confident and he is the better goalie, right now. We should ride him and worry about what his status is after the playoffs are done.
 
To be honest I don't like Quicks contract. You never should sign goalies long term. Goalies are so unpredictable.
 
I more so wonder what if Quick had one more year on his deal last year and this was the year he was re-signing.
 
Can't believe some of you are doubting Quick. We went how many years without a good goalie? Now we have a top 10 in the league who has been our #1 for 4 years, and people now want to go back to the days of uncertainty because he has had a bad 2 months after surgery?

That is all you need to know about Quick.
 
I love and support both goalies. Would there be a chance we see Bernier on the team next year- I would say >25%.

Would I tandem both for the rest of the year - yes. Bernier ups his trade value and right now gives us a little better chance to win. Quick rests a bit, recuperates his back and is ready for playoffs.

I will play the game and since it is highly hypothetical I will even trade him to the enemy

Quick and Martinez for Hall and MPS.


Of course it's hypothetical, very unlikely, and won't happen.

Most likely, because the way he's playing we'll get good value. He's making a strong case for himself though. We would probably get a good return for either guy.
 
JQ's problems are three fold

1- surgery
2- D corp
3- jacked up season

the guy underwent back surgery. i don't care how many 'experts' talk about it being a routine procedure. when you are dealing with the spine there is nothing routine or common about it. it's the friggin' spine and spinal cord, we don't move without it working properly.

the guy was cleared a week before the lockout ended. this means he likely had little to no chance to workout during the lockout. the offseason conditioning and strength training i am certain was put on hold all that time. most likely wasn't in pads and taking shots. it wouldn't surprise me if he literally went from being medically cleared to opening day without having been on the ice more than 10 times since winning the Cup.

no Greene, no Mitchell and rookies in the D. the pairs juggling...it's all been discussed ad nauseum. the Kings D this year is not the same and it has had a definite influence on his play.

shortened season, with a very compressed schedule. this means the team has had little practice time compared to a regular season. this has given him less time to get up to speed, get back in shape and for the team to work on the D zone.

all three of those are what's wrong with JQ right now. the reset button gets pressed this summer, which i expect will allow him and the team to return to normal.

JB is traded at the draft, JQ is the man for years to come
 
Quick is recovering from major surgery. Sutter is just playing him too much this season.

I don't think we will ever see Quick at 0.946% in the playoffs again, but he should be a solid ~0.920% goalie. Which would be a top 15 goalie each season.

Bernier is having a great season, no reason not to play him more down the stretch. Split the games and give Quick some extra recovery time. Maybe play Bernier Saturday and Quick on Sunday and Tuesday. Then the better performing goalie plays Thursday.

This is the weakest argument because Bernier plays in front of the same defense and has had no issues making big saves consistently.

Quick would be harder to trade with Cap going down next year.

Also he is owed a lot of money.
 
Only in LA would fans be debating trading a goalie with 142 regular season wins and 20 playoff wins with a Stanley Cup and Conn Smythe in 4 1/2 seasons.

Pretty much. I wasn't around this forum during the #99 years. But I am sure some people wanted him gone too at certain points.
