What if the Leafs never traded Wendel Clark?

Not sure that's true for Wendel. His best season was in 1994 when he scored 46 in 64, which would have put him on a 60 goal, (and a 100 point pace in 84 games). Aka the basis for how the Leafs could get value like Sundin in the first place...
Best year after the trade

That was an amazing trade for us lol. Clark for Sundin, the 2 are not even in the same realm talent wise. I love Clark, but getting Sundin was amazing. We had some great runs in the East.
Coming off a 113 point season at like 24 years old or something.

It’s not all about talent. Clark was a heart and soul guy. Could hit, fight and score. I’m not saying you guys shouldn’t have done the deal though.

It was great in the long run, but trading Clark hurt at the time. He was the captain, a great player and a fan favourite. I still remember how upset Don Cherry was at the time of the deal.

What if they kept the draft pick that turned into Scott Neidermeyer?
Then we probably would have used that pick to draft Eric Lindros……

Toronto was trending for last place and the first overall pick early in the year when we made a trade with Quebec sending them a guy we had just drafted 6th overall 2 years earlier and 2 second round picks for 3 vets. With the pure intent to make them slightly worse and us slightly better in the short term.
It worked enough that we were only the second worst team in the league that year. (The expansion sharks had the 2nd pick)

To be fairly honest, I don't even know who that is. I was a kid at the time of the trade, so I only remember the big name guys from back then.
Oh I understand that just saying it actually wasn’t that lopsided of a trade we lost a great pk defence man and the heart and soul of the team in Clark

Clark is usually not measured in goals and assists by Leaf fans. He rose above it with character and is today very well liked and fondly remembered for things other than points.
It was a bad Team Wendle came to and he took over the fan base with his play. He’s my favourite all time.
Leaf Legend already. His mom was worried about cClarks hand and hoped he didn’t hurt it after breaking Steve Smiths face one time lol. Haha

Remember when Clark fought McSorley because he was standing up for Gilmour? That’s a leader right there.
If you seen big Mac and Clark side by side you would question Clark s sanity haha. McSorely is a big dude. Clark cut him up pretty bad on that fight. McSorely wanted to catch Gilmour coming across the middle and almost got him bad. I remember it so clearly. :)

Me too. I remember watching that game. I also remember Pat Burns trying to get at Melrose.

Melrose told him to go eat some more donuts lol then sent a big box of donuts to his room and Burnsie took them down to the beach and gave them to the kid beach bums lol

Only in Toronto is a bottom pairing pk guy and a broken down grit grinder equivalent to an prime aged elite HOF PPG C. we also got Garth butcher back so he filled the same role as Sylvain.

No complaints from my view whatsoever with acquiring Sundin. It's tough to fully quantify what the trade of their captain meant to that team though. Clark was also certainly neither broken down nor grit grinder at that time. Lefebvre was the better bet going forward in comparison to Butcher too. That's particularly true given that Butcher retired after that lone season with the Leafs.

He never came close to playing a full season again after that and aside from the 96-97 season never put up anything close to what we got out of his broken body between 92-94.
This is and was the gold standard of selling high on an asset.
