What if Podkolzin does Nichushkin?

I don’t know if it is that he’s being “put in a position to succeed” or if he’s just working extra hard now realizing it’s his last chance. The guy has become known here for staying late after practice, being a fiend in the gym, skating his bag off during games etc. I don’t know if he did any of that in Vancouver but if not there you go.

He was apparently known for that in Vancouver as well.

The thing with Podkolzin is his ability to get in on the forecheck, recover pucks, play really good along the boards. It has all improved drastically this year from when he was in Vancouver. He's more consistent now. Also helps that guys like Draisaitl and McDavid are just on a different level than anyone he played with in Vancouver , so Pod gets to learn from the games greatest forwards every practice.

The guy has hands of stone so it's unlikely he ever becomes a ppg player.

If he works hard enough and builds enough chemistry with Draisaitl that could probably create the impression he's top six caliber.

That's good enough on this team as long as he recognizes that and keeps his salary demands low.

He's relentless on every play and keeps so many pucks alive. I'm surprised he just turned 23 this year. Lots of upside to him on a dirt cheap deal

He's got a whip of a shot though, that's the one thing I could see helping him get up into 40 point territory. If he's a 20-20 guy next year at his cap it's a massive win.

I was surprised when Van dumped him and ultimately later dumped Sprong (whom most on the Canucks board) felt took Pod's spot. Pod just didn't produce anything for them. Maybe the system in Edm allows him to do that. Tocchet is tough on guys like Pod, Hog, Kuz to play the system he wanted. Ice time could get cut if they didn't.

He has for in extremely well. Leon and Connor have both given high praise when asked about him and that's not given out in that manner the way they did for everyone. You can tell Leon likes playing with him and he has helped a ton.

While it's a borderline miracle how Nichushkin developed into what he is today but you can't deny Podkolzin is exactly like him at the same age. Nuke looked like he couldn't elevate the puck when shooting, his hands were that bad.

Wow yeah this really short sample size of sudden success is totally going to keep up. Not the previous massive sample size of weak offence.

Because one other recent Russian player had an amazing turnaround, checks out that it seems likely to happen here too.

Podz is a pretty solid player who needed that guidance and push from the type of coach the Oilers have and then add in practicing on the same line as McDavid or Draisaitl, he's able to absorb things from them which is helping him round out his game. Its that simple. He's learning from the games best. There was a reason he was drafted 5th overall.

Pod was loved in Vancouver because of his hard work, a lot of people were really high on him, including myself for a long time.

But a change of scenery did him well honestly

Ugh. Jinx thread. How to counter this? Can we get some Nucks fans in here to reiterate he’s a bust?

You won't find a single Canucks fan who will wish ill on Podkolzin. He was and is still loved here.

Much like Hoglander, and Kuzmenko they just don't fit our system. Podkolzin has a pretty solid rookie season, where he was asked to crash the net, and keep his stick on the ice and get dishes from EP.

The moment you start asking him to do things like forecheck, and play defense is where he starts to get lost.

Yeh I could see that. The hard working player type that he is, will never have much haters. No doubt he’s liked by Nucks fans. But honest assessments of his game from Nucks fans have said he’d never be a top 6.

You don’t think he’s a good forechecker or defender though? Interesting.

it absolutely does help that the guy is extremely likeable, I can’t honestly say a bad word about him

Explain how the two players are similar? Other than being Russian? What're you going for here? Russians are x? What could the x be?
Both are power forwards, both are 10th overall pick, both were disappointing at the start of their NHL careers.

I see him more of a maroon type player for the oilers whose a faster forechecker. Oilers desperately needed the physicality he brings after losing Holloway and he's made that loss much more palatable m

You can tell how proud Drai is of Podz after his goal last night. A “well done kid well done,” Pat on the head I don’t see Drai ever give to other players.
