If you start a sentence with "what if", and it's not a proposed solution to an existing problem, you can bet good money it is a worthless conversation.
I'd be willing to bet you'd have a lot of legitimate, topic related comments in a thread titled "what if Kovalchuk had not signed in NJ?". Its not a worhless conversation just because you dont like the subject matter. Speculation is interesting and enlightening in many instances. You just have to realize its only speculation.
