What has Markov become?

Alex Edler

If you watch both teams the two are very comparable right now. Both have a tendency to pinch, questionable defensively and have consistency issues, albeit for different reasons. In fact, Edler is notorious for allowing two on ones. The exceptions are Markov can man a powerplay single-handily, whereas Edler can't, but he is extremely fast, the opposite of Markov.

thing is, at the beginning of the season, he was.

Only because Subban wasn't playing ;). Subban was our best dman from his get go. I'm taking nothing away from Markov. I love the general, but PK's athleticism allows him to do things Markov could only dream of.

His 5 on 5 icetime should be limited to close to nothing. Imo Tinordi, Weber, Kaberle, etc. Are all better than him at even strenght.

Might be a good idea to play 7 dmen in playoffs.

Kaberle? Roughly equal at best. Weber? please..

He should take some time off after tonight, maybe some therapy days, but Markov is and will be our second pairing d-man for the playoffs and will HAVE to be a workhorse like he was during the first half of the season if we're going to have any chance at going far. He'll have to suck it up even if he's old and hasn't had much conditioning tbh, everyone gives it his all in the playoffs and he should be no exception.

And he will also be int he lineup tonight, helping us go into the post-season on a two game win streak hopefully. We need to win this game, for so many reasons.

still believe it's just "natural progression" huh ?

Well no, he took roids and if it weren't for Therrien he'd probably have regressed to a bottom pair D, right?
Not sure what your comment has anything to do with what you brought up anyways, what a failed comeback..You're usually better at this. Pick your game up or don't play.

Can't believe people think he's garbage at 5 on 5. He makes great outlet passes and tries to help score but our finishing sucks! Anyone know what his regular strength As are?

And although he pinches (risk/reward) and is pretty slow when he's on after 30s, he does make good defensive plays when in position.

The guy is really getting a lot of **** for nothing. People wanting Tinordi, Weber and Kaberle over him for ES, LOL! Manage his minutes, fine, but seriously think about this team without Markov. Remember when PK was unsigned? What were the stories coming out of the Habs locker room? "Markov proving doubters wrong." Sure he's slowed, but the talent is there. It's just fatigue. It's not like he's inherently a worse player outside of that at this point in his first pro hockey (or any hockey) since 2 years of rehab!!

Defensively he's not strong anymore. I really wish Therrien did not use him so much this year as this is the most hockey Markov has played in years.

This coming from the guy who thinks Emelin isn't good enough to be in the NHL? It's amazing Therrien gave the most minutes to a pairing where both players were worse than Weber :sarcasm:

Markov is horrible for the price we signed him for. This was mentioned many times...and the homers said we shouldn't let him go. He is a shell of his former self.

-7th in league in points for a D.
-2nd in the league in PPP for a D (behind Subban)
-22nd in the league in TOI/G for a D, team leader. Third on team in even strength TOI/G behind Gorges and Emelin.

Even if he couldn't defend at all (which isn't true, he's horrible gaff prone but he's still a top 4 player), you are going to pay premium for that.

He's overpaid, but think of that as balancing out how badly Subban is underpaid. Kaberle and Visnovsky got well over 4m on the market and Markov is better defensively than either of them. If he walked tomorrow he'd still be able to get 5m. So yes, overpaid, but once again, ridiculous hyperbole while you call others homers. I hate how Therrien uses Subban less than Markov, but if Markov was "horrible", the Habs would also be horrible, considering how much he is used.

If anything, this season has shown how poor the overall assessment of players by members of this board has become. I really think it's hit an all Time low.
Seriously, we've heard it all, Plekanec sucks and should get traded because he's not a real #1, DD is the blamed for every bad thing, PK not even top 30 and barely top 60, Price stinks, Eller just 3rd line potential, Markov worse than Weber, MaxPac a disappointment despite a career high pace...

All this in a year where we are fighting for top seed in the division, when most didn't even expect us to make the POs. It's been a lame year..

The inability around here to look at the entire season as a whole instead of focusing on the last 5 (or worse yet, 1) game is just remarkable.

Yes, Markov has been poor (defensively at least, he's still producing points) since Emelin went down. He's no longer a guy you want carrying a plug like Boullion, especially when often given first pairing minutes, but no, that doesn't mean he was "carried" by Emelin, it means they were a good fit together, much as Komisarek once was. And yes, it's very likely he's tired considering how much he has been used. But why can't we criticize a player without completely ignoring everything they have done over the past year?

I don't think it's just Markov that's been poor. The whole team has looked bad during that stretch. Even our Norris candidate took some poor decisions and looked bad at times.
