It's funny, because whenever Carolina is brought up as a possibility on the Pens board, someone inevitably will post "no way, Karmanos has a chip on his shoulder, he is not trading with us." What's the story behind you thinking it's JR that's holding the grudge?

PK forced Rutherford into retirement to make way for Francis and disowned his son over the trust fund spat, whom JR brought with him to Pittsburgh (Jason).

I don't think EDM needs Lack, while he would be an upgrade on Gustavsson EDM have Brossoit they want to try bring along and Nick Ellis also playing very well in the AHL with a good goalie Laurikainen playing well below them.

Plus aside from some questionable decision making Gustavsson has actually played pretty well in relief of Talbot. Which is pretty good considering how long he has to go between starts. His numbers are pretty good for a backup: 1-1-1, .923S%, and 2.00GAA.

Talbot has absolutely stolen some games, and had some iffy games. He gets hung out to dry by some very iffy defending quite often still. And he's cemented as a number 1 G he definitely needs some more rest.

Next October, Sparks will require waivers. So, it would cause a battle between Lack and Sparks to see who can be the backup and who goes on waivers.

Some fans would be opposed to that. I'm not sure how I feel about it.

You don't think Sparks is ready to be a backup?

I do not and to be honest I don't think he will ever be ready, I think that when it comes to goaltending this team needs a near complete restructure.

We have our #1 in Andersen but we need a backup and some TOP goaltending prospects, there is a reason I wanted Carter Hart at 31 last year.

Once you get past Andersen we have NOTHING

I will agree to this as well. When Talbot has been on his game (most of the season) he handles his rebounds quite well...you can tell hes off when hes kicking out bad rebounds or mishandling the puck. He looked off at times last night in Buffalo.

That being said - Lack hasn't even been good enough to spell Cam Ward...why would Chia go after him? esp at his cap hit... Id rather keep Gus, whose been the better backup going on 2 years now.

Lots of talk on here of a defenceman going to Edmonton from Carolina. I could see an opportunity to further expand a deal to include Lack and his cap hit.

Honestly, his cap hit isn't an issue. Canes had to take on Bickell's salary JUST to get to the Cap floor last year. That comes off the books next year (he's on IR now) and they have no players that are expected to get big raises. Their UFAs are Stalberg, McClemment, Hainsey and Tennyson. Their RFAs are Nestrasil, Teravainen, DiGuiseppe, McGinn and Dahlbeck. Teravainen, if he turns it on, is the only one of those that might get a substantial raise (god, our forwards suck).

They are likely going to have to sign some higher dollar UFAs or take on another cap hit just to reach the floor again.

Guy was doing a **** poor job with the team for a few seasons and would have been canned had the owner been anyone but a friend.

Asking him to step away looked a lot better for him than the alternative.

Not sure how much of it was JR vs. PK though. PK may have been resisting a rebuild and wanting to "add to get over the hump". Hard to tell but I'm guessing it wasn't only JR.

I said this as soon as JR went to Pittsburgh (you can look it up). JR is a very good GM for making moves that takes a good team and puts them over the hump. He's not afraid to make a move that sacrifices the future for now. The moves he made in 2005/6 were nothing short of brilliant and the moves he made in Pittsburgh were similar.

He's not the GM I'd want for a rebuilding team though, which is what the Canes needed from about 2009 on.
