What happens if a team doesn't make a pick by the time the clock ends?

We we're talking about it on the Habs board jokingly and I had no idea what actually happens if (for some reason) Say a team doesn't pick by the time there allotment ends,

Do they forfeit the pick?
Do they slide, I.e. they we're picking 6th and now they pick 7th?
Does nothing happen?

Someone brought up this happend to the Vikings years ago in the NFL and they slid down to 9 because they didnt make a pick, thought it was interesting but didn't know what would happen

It has never happened, but i believe it was close to happening before a team was close and it just slides to the next pick. And the next pick moves up.

Happened to Minnesota in the NFL draft in 03. They didnt get their pick submitted in time (7th overall) and the Ravens and Panthers ran their choice up and got in ahead of them before the Vikings finally submitted a pick (ended up 9th overall)

It seemed like this happened several times on day 2 when I went to the 2012 draft in Pittsburgh. The clock is obviously faster, but it would run out and there would be nothing for a bit then they would announce the team had called a time out.

What is the point of having a clock if teams can call time out?

If it's an American team, Gary makes a joke. If its a Canadian team, they are immediately relocated to Albuquerque.

As mentioned teams have a timeout, we've seen it used a handful of times usually if a team is working out a trade. In theory the pick would slide like we've seen a couple times in the NFL.

At least in the first round, the clock is almost just be there for show. Teams enter the pick at the table and there's usually a TV production person near the table waiting to give the green light for the table to walk up to make the announcement on the stage. In particular, I remember the 2011 Draft being really slow because Canadian teams had 11 first rounders and TSN interviewed everybody. I was sitting by one impatient fan yelling at a team to hurry up and make their pick and I had to point out that the previous pick was still being interviewed, so that was the speed bump not the team currently on the clock.

For day 2, the clock really does seem artificial. One of the humorous parts of day 2 was that it was used to be Jim Gregory (RIP) who would keep things running on schedule from the stage. When a team got close to having time expire, he'd nag them in a grumpy voice to hurry up and make their selection.

It's like when you had a later class in college, you know your friends are gassing $1 beers at a Thursday night happy hour...you've been subconsciously inching your desk towards the exit for the last 23 minutes haha ...the first indication of wrap up, you bolt like it's a prison break...

They'd probably just wait longer. There are some exceptions. Florida pestered Bettman and Campbell and the rest in 2003, saying they thought they should be able to draft Ovechkin (who was two days too young for the 2003 draft) because of leap years and shit like that.

Their owner had a real burr up his ass and so he kept sending Dudley, his GM, up to the dais to plead his case. Dudley had to humor him and went up four or five times, and was eventually told if he continued this stunt, or worse yet, went up on TV and tried to draft an ineligible player, Florida would not only not get him, but they'd lose the pick entirely and face whatever other penalties the NHL braintrust could think up, later on.

But barring pissing them off, they'd just wait a bit longer, especially on day two. They keep it collegial. No one is standing there with a stopwatch. That's a media-driven invention and it doesn't reflect what's going on.

I had some fun memories of the 2019 Draft. Towards the end, I had a front row seat and was trying to get my Brodeur jersey autographed. Security guard saw me and motioned me over to say that everybody was going to exit at a certain section. Got my autograph thanks to him. Also some random Joe tried to get on the draft floor and the guard stopped him; Dude had a suit and briefcase but no credentials and begged the security guard to just let him take one selfie from the stage to no avail.

I lingered around for a little bit just to see who I might run into, but had to run to grab my bags from my hotel and catch a flight. To my surprise, I was among Colorado's contingent while going through security. LA and Arizona's crew were already waiting in adjacent gates. I thought I made pretty good time to get to the airport, but they must have had things already packed up ready to go.

Really hoping Vegas hosts the draft next year.

You would think, but more often than not they still made the pick. I am guessing they were considering an offer, but like I said, why have a clock if you can just say “sorry, need more time,” after it’s up.

They call timeout like LA did in the 2003 draft. Then continue to sit there unsure of who to pick at 27, then look at the hockey digest rankings, and use the mags info to make the wrong picks. MOSTLY TRUE!

The Winnipeg jets called a timeout/ extended time in the 2 nd round 2 years ago.

They weee shocked that Chibrikov was still available at their pick 45ish. They had him slotted in the first round and also usually shy away from Russian players…

They took the timeout and ended up selecting him.

Recently signed him to a 3 year ELC and he was seen in Wpg durring the 1 st round of the playoffs…

I would like that to work out well for all parties
