Anyone remember that ot game between Pittsburgh and washington where nedved scored after a few ots?

It was crazy because mario lemieux got kicked out of that game, and I believe the caps also had a penalty shot in ot.

I remember seeing mario celebrating with the teams at ice level as he was already in his normal clothes. I dont know why but that stuck with me.

Here's the game summary on Hockey Reference if you're curious, and Mario Lemieux did get a game misconduct at 19:24 of the second period. 1995-96 Eastern Conference Quarter-Finals Game 4, Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Washington Capitals Box Score: April 24, 1996 | Hockey-Reference.com

Doesn't say anything about an unsuccessful penalty shot, but that might just not be something that website includes in their game summaries.

It's easier to score nowadays.
I think it is a change in mindset by coaches, plus hopefully officials are instructed to call penalties.
Coaches, whether you lose in 5 minutes or 55 minutes, it's still a L. So, no point in playing ultra conservative to basically play a 2nd game and be really worn out for the next one.

Officials, used to be able to get away with anything in OT during the PO. NHL/TV partners really don't want ultra long OTs.

Ya, 6+ period hockey games generally just devolve into joyless slogs. My hot(ish) take is any game that goes 6 or more periods is the result of the officials not wanting to do their job.
