What happened to playoff hockey?

Are you enjoying playoff hockey compared to years past?

It was always a different game when the playoffs started. Things were rough and it was a war every shift especially in the 1st round

Do you like what the game has become or do you miss that rougher style?

It seems things are just way softer and maybe that’s what the league wants

Definitely miss the violent collisions and fights of years gone by. Speed is faster now though, likely because of the lack of violent collisions.

My team isn’t in the playoffs this year so it’s not the same. Thankfully the Devils get to experience the Carolina Brind’Amour’s this year.

What makes playoff hockey exciting is it has more speed, intensity, and hitting than you could possibly sustain in an 82 game schedule. Players have to push themselves harder in all aspects and that makes more entertaining hockey.

What I don't understand is why the league decides to change the rulebook as well. Stuff that would normally be interference, cross checking, etc in the regular season suddenly has a different standard which in my opinion negative affects the game and pisses off the fans because there's more ambiguity in the calls.

I’ve only watched the Jets/Blues series but the officiating seems a bit up in the air. Combine that with some replays from other series’ idk what truly qualifies right now.

I love hockey in many variations. So I love it both ways.

If you like a rougher style, check out the Washington/Montreal series. Highly phsyical games.

I don’t miss the expectation that the star players would be laying face down on the ice by Game 3.

I’m all for hate, but the NHL allowed discipline to slip away and we’re still in a correction for that.

The couple of games what I've been able to watch have been good, but looking at tonight's highlights a couple of goals are quite embarrasing for playoff hockey.

For example the Canadiens first goal against Washington. There's five Caps players "defending" the crease area versus two Habs players, and they do nothing to prevent them from scoring. No physicality or desperation whatsoever.

And then there's the Nichushkin goal for Colorado. Dallas completely loses coverage which can happen, but then you have Duchene just whining and waiving his arms around. I don't know if he was complaining to the referees about an interference call, or if he was complaining to his own teammates for giving up the slot. Either way, you deal with that shit after the whistle.

And I get that he was behind the play and would have no chance of catching up, but at least make it look like you are trying. At the very least don't cry to the referees or your teammates while the play is still going.

The faster the game is the less it is a point with trying to play old time hockey, because you get burned and ends up on wrong side of the puck.

I have long been a proponent that if its a penalty in the regular season, its a penalty in the playoffs. The sport needs consistency so that players learn to play every game the same because the rules are being applied the same way. I hate how there is this expectation that everything loosens up in the playoffs, either call it that loose in the regular season, too, or tighten it up in the playoffs.

Also, I have also long loathed game management. If one team is fouling like crazy, well then let them play a man down all game, they only have themselves to blame. I hate penalizing one team because their opponent is playing way over the line and the refs just need to "even it up"

Yeah, the changing of the rules devalues the achievements teams make during the playoffs. The games, and therefore their outcome, become less about who's the most skilled, who is the best at playing the sport of hockey and instead becomes a contest of who can swing their sticks at the most jaws or sit on players the longest. It's unsportmanlike and it goes against the spirit of the game. I hate it.

I want to see greatness achieve greatness, not mediocrity lumberjack its way to championships.
