What happened to Joffrey Lupul?

For those that said he never put it all together, I actually think he did. Lupus-Bozak-Kessel was actually one of the best lines in the league for quite some time. Unfortunately he was injury prone and after forcing multiple hasty returns would continually find ways to re-aggravate those existing issues. He had talent and desire but his skill wasn’t there. Unfortunately we’ll never really know if his second opinion or the Leafs medical staff were more accurate in terms of him being able to return.

You obviously have a Toronto centric opinion of him. There are only two players that ever donned the Oilers jersey that basically just gave up playing and floated and pouted... Lupul and POS (Patrick O Sullivan). Spoiled millionaire hockey player. Good riddance to the guy. At least Mike Comrie returned and made amends.
We met on an airplane and I talked to him for a while. My impression is from meeting him. (Unlike those whose impression is based from someone who may have read a post the Oilers had a conquest party for him.)

As an Oiler fan I don't bear ill will to him.

He did put it together. Had 3-4 solid seasons as a top 6 forward early on in his career, first line production for parts of 2-3 seasons in Toronto plus a bunch of other reasonably productive middle six forward years.

He just had a ton of injuries. it's hard to play professional hockey into your 30s with a bad back.

He was a 22-year-old good looking hockey player getting to play in Southern California where he could go flirt with pretty California girls on the beach all year round.

Then he gets traded to Edmonton. The most northern NHL city on the map. Cold. Less sunshine. No beaches. No California girls.

All so Chris Pronger could enjoy having his trade request fulfilled.

Lupul was probably thinking: "Damn that Chris Pronger. He is almost as good looking as me, and much taller than me. Plus, he already has got himself a beautiful woman. What about me? I am just going to tank it in Edmonton so they trade me out of there".
It's also a funny coincdedence that when Anaheim traded Pronger to Philadelphia, Lupul was also involved in that trade which sent him back to the Ducks.

He certainly could've played one more year, but the Leafs didn't want the off-ice stuff around their young players, so off to Robidas Island he went.

I had a lot of Maple Leafs fans in Toronto telling me that he was an elite winger and that he would be playing on Crosby's wing at the 2014 Olympics.

If you told them "well, I don't know about that", they would feverishly defend their opinion and say "Yes. He will be playing with Crosby at the Olympics. You will see".

You know it's funny on here. So many people have a lot of 'Toronto Friends' who say such and such like this nonsense, and yet I've been around hundreds of Leafs fans my entire life and not one of them has ever said this.

As a Leafs fan, I did'nt think too highly of him to be honest. Talented player, but I didn't think much of him as a person.

Agreed. He had talent but came off as a tool. Figured upon retiring he hit up the highend clothing stores and Bar Lounges in Manhatten.

It's their not very clever way of trying to validate asinine assumptions in their heads and try to pass it off as Leaf think.

I have actually seen 2 posters in threads with nothing to do with Toronto start talking about "I bet Leafs fans think this" with absolutely no basis and then march into Leaf threads and parade whatever stupidity around as if that was the Leaf fans opinion when really it was 2 randoms who hate the Leafs inventing shit in their heads.

I remember when he get incredibly overrated in 2012/13

I mean he was very good for a couple years in Toronto. And he was one of the few guys we've had in a long time that actually showed emotion in games.

67 points in 66 games his first season full season in Toronto. Following year was the lockout and he broke his arm from a Dion shot early in the season. He came back and scored like 12 points in 3 games and finished the year with 18 points in 16 games along with 3g 1a in the playoffs vs Boston.

And then it was downhill from there with more injuries.

I had a lot of Maple Leafs fans in Toronto telling me that he was an elite winger and that he would be playing on Crosby's wing at the 2014 Olympics.

Congrats you found facebook Leaf fans.

How many times has the thread been made? He was made of glass and retired because of injuries. Like it was mentioned before, try using google as you will get your answer faster than waiting for comments like this one.

If I remember correctly Lupul had a great start to the 2013-14 season and there was some talk if he would get any consideration to make the Canadian Olympic team in 2014. I can't recall anyone who said he would be playing on Crosby's wing if he did get selected.

Always gives me a chuckle that there is likely well over a few million Leafs fans in the world but that one irrational Leafs fan said it so they all must've said it.

He has or had a golf tournament in Edmonton every year and the course is always in shambles afterwards.

Which reminds me of a young Lupul drilling some poor sap's car at BVJ with a golf ball years ago.

Why was he hitting a golf ball into a parking lot full of cars?

But if you read on Patrick O'Sullivan a ´ittle bit, you'd understand why he basically cut his career short... hockey was an escape from reality for him not something he truly wanted to pursue at that point
