What happened to Dal Colle?

I think everyone agrees with that. It's pretty clear that the verdict is in on him being any sort of regular and/or impactful NHL player.

I think the question was more "Why did he bust" or what about his game specifically didn't translate. That might be overthinking it though
just off the top of my head, other islander fans can elaborate
-his initial stats, draft year, were inflated by linemates who then departed his +1 draft year (so really he was never as good as his initial stats appear - think of Rob Schremp with the London Knights). Game for Oshawa stagnated then declined before picking up for the Frontenacs, another team with good linemates for MDC
- he lacks speed, something that he has not improved at
- despite his size he is very sheepish and does not really play much of a "power forward" type game

Interesting input and I'm not saying you're wrong but based on the stats it doesn't seem like he was carried or a product of others though. He led Oshawa in all of Goals, Assists and Points in both his D and D+1 years.

That D+2 year that he started on Oshawa where he wasn't even a PPG (25P in 30 G) was the first red flag, he lit it up after getting dealt to a stacked Kingston team though.

What's with the sudden Michael Dal Colle obsession all of a sudden on the main boards? First the "Bennett v. MDC" thread gets bumped, then the "value of MDC" thread is made on the trade board, and now we get 2 (two!) threads asking what happened to him. All this in the span of like 5 days about a guy no one has talked about in over a year.

The first red flag was not making the world juniors team, but the blinders came on when Oshawa won the Memorial cup

not suggesting he was carried so much as he benefited from good linemates, inflating scouts overall evaluation of him. Definitely a top round talent, but in retrospect maybe not a top 5

I meant that at the time of the draft he shouldn’t have been projected 5th overall

He still theoretically could have become an excellent NHL player

Sad he did not
Most scouts got this one wrong. Snow gets a lot of the blame yes but i do believe many gms would have taken Dal Colle 5th overall. I personally loved his shot coming out of juniors but i always preferred players with speed and skill which is why I wanted Ehlers.

Maybe he thought he would be the one to take the NHL by storm but when he saw the younger Barzal do it, he pulled out the old video game console and played his sorrows away

True, he’s not quite slow but he’s not a speedster either
His speciality is his hands around the net on the powerplay, one of the best in the NHL at that and deflections. He's got a good shot too just rarely uses it.

I live in Oshawa, watched him live plenty, didn't see what all the fuss was about. Very average skill set, didn't look visually dominant.

Well, he was the consensus 5th best prospect in literally every ranking. The Islanders were getting him no matter what.

He just hasn't improved at all since his draft year.

It looked like he was going to be at the very least a James Neal type of winger but he just sucks at everything .

This is very true. I remember people on the Jets forum freaking out for winning our last game that took us from 6th to 9th in the draft. They figured we blew our only chance at Dal Colle and ended up with Ehlers.
