This has been the number one team for development in the ushl and really good every year . Last year they were not good and this year they are flat out really bad . Is this just a down year or did something fundamentally change their with the recruiting ect ?

Billionaire owner moved on. He was willing to invest a lot of money into the team and that's why they did so well. New ownership doesn't have the same pockets.

Well they certainly have the deep pockets but don't really care to spend as much or devote the time towards the steel like previous owner

It will be interesting with them because i’m sure top tenders from Canada not going there anymore - rink is kinda dump it looks and they don’t get huge crowds

Quite surprising to me that Adam Valentini hasn’t left for Kitchener. Rangers are a good team, great coach and a beautiful arena. I thought he’d be a Ranger after Christmas

Have been rumors ushl teams have demanded 50-75k transfer fees so i’m not sure about that but chicago in last place and i see him and other 2008 Canada kids heading back to CHL next year so maybe that’s reason staying around .

Agreed, but I'm guessing they just want to have a somewhat functional roster instead of bringing up bums from the NAHL or u18 minor hockey to fill out the lineup.
they are in last place and getting close to statiscally not making the playoffs so not sure it even matters - start bringing up some u -16 draft picks .

Honestly until you brought it up I completely forgot about the Steel. What a fall off, certainly had their day in the sun. Fantilli, Celebrini, Perron, Power, Coronato, Samsokevick, Hage, Moldenhauer and now no one that stands out... It's a shame it was a really great program in the USHL and just in general even compared to CHL/NCAA/USNDTP.

I think a lot is being made over a few bad years. Like sure, they are nowhere near what they were.

Will they get it back? We'll see. It's not like they've sucked for 10 years. It's a year and a half, and I wouldn't even say they sucked last year.

They still have some good prospects (didn't really struggle to recruit them). It's not as if they're a laughing stock in the USHL. They just aren't the top dog right now.

Too early to pronounce them done as a top junior program.

Are they allowed to do that??

I'm guessing Valentini and Hage jump to CHL next season then re-evaluate their Michigan commitments prior to Fall 2026.
